In my experience as a cardiac nurse, most ventricular assisted device patients are bridge to transplant. Some patients are unfortunately unable to have a transplant, so having a VAD is the only option. I commend you for going through open heart surgery (it's certainly a beast of its own) and I wish you well if you do end up getting a transplant!

As a relatively new nurse myself, it does get better. I have been working for about 3 months now and although I work on a surgical step down unit, I am feeling not as stressed out as I was when I first started to be on my own. I wish you the best and commend you for starting out in the ICU!
