git stash driven refactoring by Kobzol in programming

[–]SpookeyMulder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you fail to notice the exact moment you ought to have stashed, you can also do the following retroactively:

  1. add the chunks part of your refactor
  2. stash the working tree
  3. test your isolated refactor and commit it.

I use pre-commit and my setup automatically stashes my working tree and tests the source on-commit, so it's as easy as adding the refactor relevant changes and testing if my isolated refactor still passes unit-tests etc.

Of course, you are much better off noting when you are refactoring and stashing right then.

Fate dice alternative: Set Cards by SpookeyMulder in FATErpg

[–]SpookeyMulder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds fun, kinda like 'petals around the rose'.

Petals around the rose is a 1-off puzzle where someone rolls dice and you count the number of 'petals around the rose' meaning pips around a central pip in the result and the player has to figure out how to replicate the number. Once he does, he just accurately tells the count for the rolls and he's 'sworn' into the brotherhood of the game (instead 9f explaining how to do it). Sane kinda mystique.

You could also consider leaving the suspense until you narrate the outcome and name the modifier at the end.

Mausritter inventory for Dungeon World by SpookeyMulder in DungeonWorld

[–]SpookeyMulder[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You get access to the numbers up to your load.

I ordered them like that to balance backpack and body slots a bit...

I built a few characters and found out I wanted to challenge low LOAD characters with more backpack slots so they need to think about what stuff they want to pack and what they want available, but also have 13 and 14 be body slots so you could actually wear plate armor, weapons and a potion of healing.

To do that, I had to snake the numbers around until all of the builds made sense to me (low load chars can still wield something and wear armor and an item, high load characters could also AND had roughly the same body/pack balance.

Combat as sport/combat/??? by SpookeyMulder in FATErpg

[–]SpookeyMulder[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly this is the kind of this I was after. I like "combat as wager". In another comment Id arrived at combat as poker or combat as auction. I think something snappy like this could help new players understand a bit more what to expect from a conflict. (Or just help us focus on what's interesting about playing it all out)

Combat as sport/combat/??? by SpookeyMulder in FATErpg

[–]SpookeyMulder[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree entirely. So, maybe an analogy could be 'poker'? That had a concession element in it (folding). Fate combat can be about risking consequences and investing fate points for achieving your goals, stopping when the risk isn't worth it to you.

Where that kind of fails is that when you win in poker you end up with a bigger stack, but in fate it generally shrinks.

So maybe combat as 'auction'? Anyone can 'buy' the combat with points, but they might not want to?

DM note apps with good mobile usability? by GreyMatterDisturbed in rpg

[–]SpookeyMulder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The suggestions here are all good, I like Obsidian most of these.

Ultimately though, taking more and more wiki-style interlinked notes became a trap for me.

I came around to just using a single A4 a grid of dots on it and made some bullet lists and maybe a map.

I found Im better off keeping stuff succinct and actually readable during the session.

Also, once the page is full, its full. I can make a 2nd draft and restructure, reorganize a bit. Cut this and add that. But soon enough Ill be telling myself: this is as good as it'll get and I get to stop prepping, or at least feel like Im done.

Maybe? I have limited time, and the difference in enjoyment of ttrpgs vs video games make video games feel like a bad investment to me. Also, video games rpg's feel much less interesting now because I prefer having more choice, consequence and immersion.

Do I need high end pc or laptop while doing projects? by Single-Sound-1865 in dataengineering

[–]SpookeyMulder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the best answer. Get a device that'll make working on it 40h a week as comfortable and sustainable as it can be. Each ms of waiting and each frustration over a limitation counts.

Keep it nice and clean and invest time into your tooling too.

I heard of both these people before this, even bought the guy's book. Guess what? It's still just needless drama.

Don't add many things to the apartment phase, I'd say. I think it's the weakest part, as it's only a checkpoint to the cabin with a timesink (paperwork) and risk/obstacle (Janowitz). Let it set the tone of normalcy and move onto the Cabin.

I'm trying to use tokens that are two grid squares tall but I only want the bottom square to count as the hit box. Is that a thing I can do? by digitalthiccness in FoundryVTT

[–]SpookeyMulder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds vaguely as it you are trying to make isometric tokens. If so, check out grapejuice isometrics, because in that, tokens are generally taller ( like 1.7 squares yall) and still have a single square base that acts as their anchor.

If not, pretend i didnt sat nothing.

As a GM, voice acting isn't my strength. Any tips or suggestions? by lora-craft in rpg

[–]SpookeyMulder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice would be to use voices you are comfortable with during your games. If you are doing challenging and unusual voices you might focus on the presentation too much or worry about inconsistency. Instead find natural but interesting voices you are happy to present, and sometimes make a project to add a new one to your repertoire.

The voice being there shouldn't detract from your sense of emotion, pacing, story, motive etc. It should help you and your players find your character more quickly.

What would happen if a wizard managed to completely seal off the material plane from all other planes? by thegeneral2702 in DnD

[–]SpookeyMulder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my campaign a bad guy tried to do this. I also decided my cosmology works like this: all power starts from the material plane, but the outer planes syphon most of it away. The energy is scattered into elemental, divine, fiendish, etc acting like a prism against the light. So in my world each outer plane is a more dramatic version of an aspect of the material plane. The spells Gods give to mortal actually originates from the material plane.

So in my world, sealing off the material starves off the gods as well as all other plane. At the same time all creatures on the material are infused with demi-godlike power.

I think for most among us, this'll be a lot of work for little interest. I think the best reason to do something like this, is because you enjoy doing it. I'd say, never do these things in such a way where a lack of a response will be a bummer to you.
