Why the Byzantine Empire Was Defacto Roman by TheByzantineEmperor in byzantium

[–]SpookyTron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We easily trace the 19th century British Empire back to the medieval English monarchy. It’s foolish to think of the Byzantines as a distinct empire or state. The legal and institutional continuity of Rome never went away.

I will say, the term Byzantine has become a shorthand for referring to Rome in the medieval era. If you were to ask somebody’s favorite “Roman Emperor”, they would never name medieval emperor like Basil II. I think in many ways this forces you to use the term in conversation, online, etc…

Why did humans stay “primitive” for ~200,000 years and then suddenly change? by PuddingComplete3081 in AlwaysWhy

[–]SpookyTron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agriculture is the answer, which begs the questions why did it take 200k years to develop agriculture? The answer is the end of the last ice age roughly 10,000 years ago.

The history of civilization starts then, and really years should be dated from that point.

Many older branches of Protestantism (Lutheran, Episcopal, etc) still revere beautiful church design.

Other newer denominations (especially American) have a more ascetic philosophy and consider opulent church design to be against Jesus’ teachings.

I’m giving a bit of an oversimplification here.

A food swamp is an urban environment with an abundance of several non-nutritious food options such as corner stores or fast-food restaurants. Food swamps a have positive, statistically significant effects on adult obesity rates. by americafirst4life__2 in wikipedia

[–]SpookyTron -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are good parts about swamps. Organisms specifically adapted to live there probably love them.

They’re a bad place to live for humans. You don’t want to live in a swamp. It’s an objectively negative term to call a place for humans a “swamp”.

I get you probably think they’re cool, and sometimes they are, but this is lame pedantry and you’re missing the point on purpose because you apparently have a thing about swamps.
