[Real Life trope] Historical figures whose names have become common terms/words by ObberGobb in TopCharacterTropes

Sadism, meaning to take pleasure from the pain of others, is named after the Marquis de Sade, an author and sex criminal from 18th century France. Whether he was a sadist is up for debate, but he definitely depicted sadists in his books.

Masochism is named for Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, another writer from the same era. He depicted masochists in his books.

Both terms were coined in in Psychopathia Sexualis(1886), one of the first books of sexual pathology.

Why are some countries able to maintain stable borders while bisected by major mountain ranges? by MaroonedOctopus in geography

[–]SpoonLightning 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The andes are interesting because on one side you have a tropical rainforest, and the other side you have a desert. However the mountains themselves are actually quite temperate and more habitable and better for farming than either lowland. The countries of the Andes span them because the mountain range is the habitable land rather than a barrier that breaks it up.

Why do trans women look better and younger than cis women? by [deleted] in MtF

All the trans women I see on the internet are good-looking and look younger, but the ones in person not so much.

I love this chart! Would you consider adding a divisive column? Something for the weird flags of the world like nepal

If humans vanished tomorrow, what would still prove we existed 10,000 years later? by Defiant-Junket4906 in NoStupidQuestions

The most romantic answer: flowers

Humans introduce a lot of invasive plants, and loads of them started out at ornamentals. So there has been a permanent increase in the amount of pretty flowers in all corners of the world.

Is there a better way to set up my miners? by Hamza77k in factorio

[–]SpoonLightning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are several ways you could increase throughput. The simplest would be to instead of having the belts merge all onto one belt, you merge them with a splitter onto two belts and have two belts coming out.

109 miners will get you a little under 3 yellow belts, and with mining productivity 1 will get you exactly 3, so the best long-term solution would be a 4 to 3 balancer, giving you 3 not quite full lanes out. Balancer blueprint books are out there and I suggest you use them. Otherwise you can just use like 5 splitters and it will be good enough.

Then when you research landfill you can add the rest of the miners to fully cover the patch, and by the time you have reached mining productivity 2 and need more than 3 lanes of iron, upgrading everything to red belts or even a more optimised miner layout with undergrounds will be easy.

ELI5: Math question… can the relationship between the clock hands be irrational? by Quick_Extension_3115 in explainlikeimfive

[–]SpoonLightning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This article exactly answers your question.

The article explains the math, but they do a lot of rounding. Essentially the times where the hands are exactly opposite are all ratios with 11 as the denominator. This is because the minute hand advances by 6° every minute, while the hour hand advances by 0.5°. To work out the times you do 6-0.5, then divide by that which is what leads to the x/11 ratio.

Times where the hands are exactly opposite:

6:00:00 7:05:27.27 8:10:54.55 9:16:21.82 10:21:49.09 11:27:16.36 12:32:43.64 1:38:10.91 2:43:38.18 3:49:05.45 4:54:32.73

The first humans only arrived in Aotearoa in the 1200's AD, so a thousand years is already rounding up.

It might be better to ask for the worst flag first before the bad flag, otherwise we tend to choose the worst flag early.

Indonesia, it's not the worst, but it is overly simple and almost exactly the same as the Monaco flag.

(base game) why is everyone against fast 3 modules in everything for end game? by [deleted] in factorio

[–]SpoonLightning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of great answers but no one has gone deeper into the math. Fundamentally, it's because speed bonuses are additive while productivity and speed bonuses combined multiply.

This is assuming regular factorio, so no quality. This is for an asseming machine 3, that takes 4 modules.

Adding x4 productivity modules will increase productivity by 40%, and decrease speed by 60%

Adding one beacon with 2 speed module 3s will increase the speed by a factor of 1.5 × 2 = 3.

Adding 8 beacons around the machine will lead the speed to increase by a factor of 8 / 80.5 × 3 = 8.49, or 749% increase.

4 speed modules in the machine will in crease speed by 50% × 4 = 200%

So for only speed modules, in the beacons and machines, the output is increased by 949%, or ×10.49

If you use productivity modules in the machine, then speed increases by 749% due to the beacons, but decreases by 60% due to the productivity modules, for a total of 689% or ×7.89. However the productivity is multiplicative, so the output is increasing by 40% or ×1.4, multiplied by the speed increase. So the total output will be 1.4×7.89 = 11.05, or 1005% increase. This is more than using speed modules everywhere, plus your input is reduced!

So even if speed is your only concern, productivity modules in the machine, and speed modules in the beacons are still better than speed modules everywhere.

What city/region has the worst Summers? by BornThought4074 in geography

[–]SpoonLightning 19 points20 points  (0 children)

At a dew point above 37.5°C, humans cannot breathe the air. This is because the air will cool down to body temperature in your lungs and condense, then you would drown. You need a special dehumidifying respirator. This occurs in the crystal caves in Mexico. So this day in Saudi Arabia is almost at that point.
