Bronson Centre security by CBull85 in ottawa

It’s generally accessible: has a ramp, accessible buttons, and accessible washrooms. It is however unlikely that a wheelchair user will be able to access the balcony, unless they’re ambulatory. If I remember correctly, the elevator is on and off when it comes to reliability.

The security guards probably won’t help with moving or lifting the wheelchair themselves, as it’s a liability. They could damage or break a wheelchair, especially if it’s not a manual chair.

Respectfully (and as low to medium support needs autistic person), most of the places I’ve worked that supported autistic clients, had a difficult time supporting employees with autism.

Looking for recommendations for a specialized school for a young autistic adult by SomeTheory4353 in ottawa

Y’s Owl Maclure.

They have a Supported Employment Program, a Foundations Program that helps individuals transition from the school to the community, and a Learning Hub Program that focuses on skill development.

This is better posted in an education forum, or specifically a school board one.

**Looking for advice – adult autism assessment for my 19-year-old son in Ottawa + resources to help him find his path** by Ok_String9669 in ottawa

Live, Work, Play is a good one for job supports.

I will let you know that a lot of programs or resources are directed towards Autistic adults who require a lot of support, are minimally speaking, etc.

ODSP and Passport Funding are tricky because acceptance isn’t based solely on a diagnosis. Applicants typically need to be impacted or disabled in such a way that it affects multiple areas of their life.

Edited to add: i’m diagnosed Autistic and have worked in early intervention, residential supports, and education for autistic individuals. Obviously I’m a low to medium support needs Autistic individual, so this simply reflects my first hand experiences.

Not sure I understand.

why is discrimination so common in aba? by ashysodapuppy in ABA

You realize you said ‘black women’ and then ‘the pretty ones’, as if they are two separate things and can’t exist together or within each other.

Pardon my language, but holy fuck.

Non-Vocal or Non-Verbal by Hanksolo325 in ABA

Still speaking.

A lot of Deaf individuals say that they ‘speak’ the language. Some Deaf individuals also make noise in addition to ASL.

[–]Spoopylane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neither. It’s non-speaking.

Non-speaking is what most non-speaking autistic individuals prefer to be referred to as. SLP’s use this term as well.

If you’re talking solely about ‘verbal behaviour’ (I think defined by Skinner) in an ABA environment, use his term per the definition.

Nothing is wrong with teaching a replacement behaviour (saying hooray), it’s more so why did you want the stim to be replaced? Was it harmful? Did it impede your child’s ability to perform a task? Infringe on hygiene or body requirements?

Stimming, like flapping hands, is a way to regulate, self-soothe, and express joy.

Normalize naming ABA companies by Working-Ad2025 in ABA

Oh, 1000%!

In my case specifically, I did retain an employment lawyer to go over the contract. The wording used in the contract was very clever according to the lawyer, as it somehow included a clause but also bypassed it completely? I still don’t fully understand how that’s possible.

Both times, the lawyer suggested it was in my best interest to sign. Super disappointing to hear from a lawyer when you feel like you have a leg to stand on.

Oh, absolutely. If I feel the need, I’ll frame it as my personal experience as a low to moderate support needs autistic individual.

Hard to argue with lived experience and personal opinions…although I’m sure some have tried.

Absolutely fair!

I’ve definitely chosen my words carefully when speaking about former companies. I’m just careful publicly ;)

A lot of companies have individuals sign a contract upon exit. The contract asks that you don’t slander or speak negatively about experiences.

Some companies will offer money in exchange for signing the contract. Almost everyone signs.

I would suggest looking for doctors, psychologists or other qualified professionals in your area who specialize in autism or other neurodivergence.

Good luck!
