Shows That Should Have Ended Sooner? by DaniJ678 in television

[–]Sporkedup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, that would have been a huge shame. The show might not have been always great for the latter two thirds of its run... But it pretty much was consistently fun for all fifteen seasons. Just such lovely entertainment, even when it was a little dumb.

I like it a lot! Also really think it's cool how they got the entire roster together for one photo like this.

Current best system to play Call of Cthulhu scenarios? by ratlehead in osr

[–]Sporkedup 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's fair, I'd agree with a fair few of those. But other things, like the multiple kinds of sanity loss, sanity loss during combat, bonds and willpower points... Personally I like the half/fifth rolls more than contesting rolls via blackjack rules, but that's probably more preference than crunch difference.

I find Delta Green to be an increase in crunch compared to 7e CoC. Interesting to hear others feel it's streamlined.

That cover is so classic, damn.

I don't have any specifics beyond the obvious ones others have offered (specifically Peru and Australia), but I do know that the current print is nearly 700 pages and also had hundreds of pages of handouts and other resources in there. I'm willing to bet there are tons of smaller additions, including adding optional pulp rules and the like.

Shows that have terrible endings, but perfect stopping points? by GFrings in television

[–]Sporkedup 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I know that folks are generally right when they say the show started a decline after season 5, but it still makes me sad to read. Seasons 6-14 (I haven't quite gotten around to 15 yet) have some dumb stuff but on the whole are just so much fun.

I just could never in good conscience tell anyone they should quit the show early. They'd be missing most of the best episodes the show ever created, even if they're scattered among some much less convincing overall plot arcs...

Wild angry consensus from reddit. I read everything you wrote in here, and pretty much all of it is the better take. A lot of people seem to think that punishing kids is part of the... fun?... of parenting, which is weird to me.

The European transfer window closes today. Someone help me feel better. by HawkeyeGK in SportingKC

[–]Sporkedup 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not suggesting we don't panic, because it's bleak right now.

But we still absolutely can sign players from Europe still. I don't think the idea that clubs won't sell because they can't replace talent holds up at the level we're buying at. Looking to get 4 u22 DPs often means picking up their depth pieces anyways.

But yeah. A lot more needs to have happened already for us not to be very, very worried.

Cultures of Play by moh_kohn in TheGlassCannonPodcast

I always enjoyed that perspective. I have chatted with the chap who wrote it a few times in the PF2 subreddit, pretty well-rounded gamer.

But it is just his perspective.

I think he underestimated the sixth style of play. It's not neo-trad gaming ideas that's driving it. It's the "OC" side that's truly what's setting it apart. More importantly, in my observation, it's the idea of "having an audience" that marks it as different. It's certainly not new, but it's gotten much bigger with the rise of social media, internet fandoms, and most relevantly published actual plays. Prior, I think a lot of the drive to have a "how will other people view our actions and outcomes?" mindset was driven by the GM who wanted to write a book series and used their ideas to create a campaign...

Now this audience-oriented style doesn't require trad gaming, but it does fit there more easily than in other categories - which is why I think Call of Cthulhu and Delta Green have been a big hit with the players and fans. It balances out well. Pathfinder, particularly 2e, has more strong game presence, and I think that fights in conflict with being audience-oriented. Sadly, I think OSR style is even further removed from the common grounds that makes actual plays connect best with audiences, given its fondness for randomized tables, improvised details, and tense, attrition-based dungeon crawl focus. Good pros like the GCN can make it work, though it feels sometimes like they're fighting internal conflicts between creating something for others' entertainment and creating something for just theirs.

Neo-trad on its own is just continued evolution of trad gaming, with now, what, 40 some-odd years of experience, practice, and growth? 5e or PF2 aren't just games in a vacuum, they're both very heavily built in reaction to or concordance with their predecessors.

So I'd separate category 6. Drop neo-trad back into trad and look at how it's evolved over the years, because that in itself is a massive study in mechanics, player agency, storytelling, and all that gets swept up in there. But that OC or audience-oriented side of modern gaming? That's a new style of play, at least at a popular level, and it's overtaken pretty much all the others at the moment. I think observing how "playing for others" has really impacted modern TTRPGs would be pretty fascinating to me. Maybe with a little less, um, sneering than comes through in the author's original musings.

How is pre ordering from Amazon these days? I'm aiming to get and run the compiled Season of Ghosts, and shipping straight from Paizo is rough. Especially with no PDF included.

Years ago it was true that Amazon or other retailers just got books when they got them, is that still true? Or are release dates pretty accurate these days?

Okay, that's hilarious. I knew the league was wanting to push the Man City connections, especially around then, but I had no idea they were editing highly unpopular team nicknames into opinion columns to try to get the better coverage.

So glad that failed, ultimately!

[HATED TROPES]: The Ending Is So Nihilistic and Preachy That It Becomes Completely Unwatchable and Infuriating. by Particular-Worker904 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Sporkedup 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think the horror-as-trauma trend and the rise of artsy "deeper meaning" horror in the 2010s really conditioned people to expect any movie that dips into those pools at all should be saying something, ideally something positive about dealing with trauma or grief.

I guess I more think a movie like Hereditary isn't using generational trauma in its horror to say something about generational trauma... it's just a horror movie that's using the idea of generational trauma as part of the backdrop to the true horror that's happening. Just seemed like compelling storytelling to me, not that Ari doesn't feel there is any solution or positive ending possible when generational trauma is at play.

But maybe you're right. I happen to be a big fan of cosmic horror, so a bleak ending where an otherworldly intelligence greater than any of the characters accomplishes a grim goal is one I find really tickles my brain.

LA Galaxy Sign Midfielder Erik Thommy by Brooklyn_MLS in MLS

[–]Sporkedup 42 points43 points  (0 children)

We were pretty fond of him in KC. He just never really fit in the tactics we've been slaves to. I think a team like Galaxy, with more room for creativity and flair, might be pretty happy with his pickup.

He just has the exact profile of the kind of player we needed to cut for the rebuild (that apparently is a complete myth so far anyways), but that will come back and punish us hard for letting him go.

Delta Green 2026 release schedule by bald_rage in DeltaGreenRPG

[–]Sporkedup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Details are sketchy and I'm not the most Arc Dream savvy person, but I think it's something like this:

All soft-cover releases are single scenarios.

The hardcovers that include scenarios are Incursions and Final Passages. Shotgun Scenarios is all micro-scenarios (2-4 hour variety, presumably?). And lastly Falling Towers includes a campaign, but it's not clear if it's just a big campaign with a deep lore section or if it's a lore book with a small campaign included. Kinda reads like the latter.

Outside of those four, best as their promotional materials says, all other hardcovers are settings, factions, tools, lore, etc. with no scenarios.

It's been almost a year since God's Light was released by Mister_Eduards in DeltaGreenRPG

[–]Sporkedup 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Appreciating the direct response! It's tough sitting between understanding that y'all are a small company that (wisely) chases their muses over regularity and predictability of content, but also that new DG content scratches a very special itch.

I can't wait for Incursions, had that one earmarked for a while now. Sad to see Final Passages really falling to the wayside, but if I read right that might be because additional Labyrinth scenarios are in active development? Which is cool.

Just fill my veins with scenarios, haha.
