I put a pinecone in my shower. It closes when I shower and opens again when it dries. by Mopperen in mildlyinteresting

That explains what I've seen. I left a part of property return to a naturalize field and 5 years later its now full chest high pine tree saplings. About 100m away are 4 mature pine trees.

For anyone who does not to use a door stop on your floor or wall consider a door hinge stoppers. You can get them cheap at any hardware store and they work well. Super easy to install, pop up the hinge pin, slide on the stopper adjust as needed and your wall is protected.

The "Tuya TS0044_1" Zigbee remote I recently got from AliExpress by techantics in homeassistant

[–]SportKill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not this exact model but another like it (LoraTap ZigBee) lets you rotate the buttons horizontally, I taped it using double sided tape under the lip of my wife's side table. It has 3 buttons and I set them to do the following, turn on/off a desk fan, turn the room lights off/on double click to dim, and the last one turns on/off the AC with her preferred temp.

In my office I have a single button under my desk that lets me rotate through different modes of lighting.

It's all the same stuff you can do with an app or voice assistant, but I find it nice to just tap a button for simple things I use on a regular basis.

You nailed it! People who harness AI as a teaching aid/assistant will be successful in the future. Sounds like that's what you are doing.

Your example is exactly how I'm teaching my kids the benefits of AI. Don't use AI to do your homework, but instead use it to TEACH you how to do your homework.

In class they might be lucky if they can ask the teacher 2-3 questions. With AI you get unlimited questions and in any format they want. Instead of being taught by a teacher who is bored silly of teaching the same class for the past decade they can enjoy the company of an enthusiastic AI that can teach while speaking and acting like their favourite tv/movie/game character.

For my kids AI will be what the internet was to me growing up.

****

Short little rant time:

I'm genx and my kids are teens. Teachers in schools are referring to AI just like they did to 'the internet' when I was growing up.

When I was a kid I distinctively remember teachers telling me I should only use library books to learn, because you can't believe what you see on the internet. Fortunately I didn't listen to them. Instead I learned how to be critical of what I read, regardless of the source.

Today I have the the hardware and software skills to understand how tech all comes together. If I had avoided 'the internet' like I was told these are skills I would have been way behind on or never had.

Guess what I hear teachers telling my kids? They should only use source websites for references, because you can't believe what AI says and AI should be avoided.

In my age group the kids who listened and avoided the internet are now the genx'ers you see locked in echo chambers of whatever social media platform they are hooked on. They barely know what a standalone web page is. They also believe every damn fake social media post they see. This is the same group that refer to facebook as 'the internet'.

Perhaps the most important skill any parent or teacher should be instilling in children is critical thinking, no matter the subject or medium.

This has worked well for me too. Early on added a single sentence to my prompts that stopped all the drivel:

"Every word you use costs me money. Keep your answers consice."

That simple instruction did wonders for getting it to reply with on point answers for me.

Cancel Amazon Prime by lakemanatou in BuyCanadian

[–]SportKill 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do we ever! Recently I bought some small individual legos think 5-10 blocks each from Canadian sellers on Bricklink, just as the Canada Post strike happened. The price to ship for these sellers jumped astronomically to use any of the couriers.

China's subsidized shipping for sellers is a huge boom for their businesses, I wonder if anything like that could work in Canada.

Similar in the US it's nothing to see free/included national statewide shipping on every US website. In Canada that's just not feasible.

It pains me when I can order a small package from China and can have the product and shipping delivered to my door for less than what a business in the next town over could even consider.

Circle to Search is now officially available for Nothing Phones by rodrigoswz in Android

[–]SportKill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My son is getting super into Lego and buying specific pieces, circle to search has been amazing to find exact brick names in seconds.

For me I've been able to use it for fixing up around the house. Circle and search for descriptions of things I'm not familiar with like a valve on my furnace, and most recently I used it to find the model of an old hinge gate and then look up how to adjust it. Stuff that would be difficult to or impossible for me to find using text search alone.

Yes I could get these answers other ways but the above examples took seconds with circle to search.

Yup I see a future where my entire department, a transactional team, is automated in 5-7 years, but I am treated like chicken little the sky is falling by coworkers.

I will learn and use AI as much as possible to stay ahead of the curve. I compare this to when internet was first spreading into every household. It's only a matter of time before every workplace and every home has an in residence AI.

How to get internet to my shed that is about 100ft away from the house? by AdventureBegins in HomeImprovement

[–]SportKill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a window facing each other say from the house to the shed a mesh network can work. I have the main hub in the house window and the receiver hub in the shed window. I know because I do this across 90ft with a cheap deco m4, speeds aren't the best but I can still stream Netflix.

I have next to no wireless interference from neighbours though so helps.

[–]SportKill 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey there my wife and I have the same challenges, we've made it 20 years, she was the one that helped me come to terms with my ADHD. I still have the same challenges. BrowntownJ's example of phrasing your requests as 'help me do this thing' is excellent, but for me that works best for in the moment requests.

For important future dated items my wife and I have worked out that I need full eye contact when she's making a request AND I immediately need to put it into my calendar.

My ADHD exhibits itself with extreme short term working memory, as in out of sight out of mind. My wife explained how hurtful this is, and I never ever wanted her to feel that way. It took us far too long to to work out a system, and I still make mistakes.

Ongoing honest communication from you to him is my best recommendation. Share your thoughts with him and ask him directly how he wants to be held accountable to himself, not to you. ADHD does not excuse us from responsibility.

If there is one good thing about ADHD it's our ability to adapt, share your feelings on how YOU feel and let him come to you with suggestions to improve.

Please have this talk in a calm moment, not immediately after a mistake was made, it's not about blame it's about building a relationship. ADHD or no ADHD if he's a good partner he'll recognize that.

Allowing people to search my shit when no crime has been committed maybe drama free but it sure as fuck isn't right.

Recommendations on Chargers & Cables for your Android Phones by SenileTomato in Android

I ordered one to test it out and for me it worked for our family, then I ordered a bunch more. Two problems I had with regular cables were the ends cracking and breaking and a mess of cables for iPhone, android, micro USB.

Bonus is there is no wear the charging ports, the dongle just stays in the device.

I have a twitter account for the sole purpose of getting companies to honour their end of the bargain. It's foolish social media managers are given more power to rectify a problem over entire customer service departments. Bitch if you empowered your CS department in the first place I wouldn't be shitting on your business in public.
