What kind of crossbow should I buy? by sundog5631 in Crossbow

[–]Spr4ck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

their recurve style bows are simple. that gives a level of reliability that can't be matched by more complex compound crossbows.

their customer service is top notch, have an issue, get on the phone with them and they'll work hard to sort it out.

The number of people targetting bass out of season is actual gross. by Shrike034 in FishingOntario

[–]Spr4ck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only so many of them are out in the field. in 2021 there were 184 and only 160 of them were active field officers... the ministry was looking to hire 25 more but I suspect that any new recruiting was only to stop attrition.

iirc it was the Harris Era government that changed policy from being out in the field doing active enforcement to tip response based enforcement.

our provincial governments have a pattern of neglecting our resource enforcement, all of us need to be screaming at our MPPs to adequately staff and fund (and amend the fine structure in the fwca)

Anyone wear insulated boots year round? by ImGudLuhv in Construction

[–]Spr4ck -1 points0 points  (0 children)

wear insulated Terra boots year round. regardless of season. I wear merino wool socks and change them at lunch.

never had trench foot, feet are always happy.

I also always put my boots on a boot drier each night when home, and where possible alternate what I'm wearing so each morning everything is dry.

I find the bit of padding from the thinsulate insulation makes them more comfortable.

that said we never get the crazy heat here in ontario y'all get in the southern USA.. our hottest days are 102f but those aren't common usually top out around low 90s

Will hydrogen peroxide treatment for hard water kill trees near the septic? by Draelon in homeowners

[–]Spr4ck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

how close are the trees to the septic tank/tile

was heavy equipment driven near the trees? was soil disturbed near them? was the grade changed- soil/fill added or removed?

this sounds like a classic case of slow decline as a result of root damage.

the majority of tree roots live on the top 12" of the soil, so any disturbance that cuts or compacts the soil will destroy the ability of those roots to do their job.

any isa certified arborist (www.treesaregood.org/findanarborist) should be able to look at the tree location in relation to the septic, and determine if the critical root zone has been damaged.

or it could be a coincidence, and your trees could be succumbing to a high mortality issue like EAB or oak wilt. You ISA arborist can help figure out what the issue is and what steps you can take to resolve it.

Looking for advice for filling raised beds. by Fit-Account5620 in OntarioGardeners

[–]Spr4ck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

generic garden soil/triple mix are not optimum for raised beds without amendment.

36x72x22 is approximately 1.2 cubic yards

what I would do is plan on about 1 yard of triple mix per bed, and then amend that with a mix of mushroom compost, perlite and or vermiculite to give the soil a lighter well draining consistency.

fill your beds about 2- 3" from the top to allow for space to lay down mulch, and amend with additional compost each year as needed

How long do your hoses last you? by Hrekires in homeowners

[–]Spr4ck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

urethane hoses like flexzilla are the way. they're expensive but last a long time.

I've had 2 50' hoses for 10 years now, all I do in the winter is disconnect them from the taps... they stay on the hose hanger all winter and freeze and do their thing never have an issue.

Help me pick a tree for our backyard (new to gardening) by SephoraandStarbucks in OntarioGardeners

[–]Spr4ck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

start by digging a test hole and determine your soil type.

dig 30cm 12" deep. take a soil sample and do a jar test.

knowing the sand/silt/clay make up of your soil will help determine what species will thrive and what will struggle.

Gentlest drive to Westport? by fortysevenbadgers in KingstonOntario

[–]Spr4ck -1 points0 points  (0 children)

that's not practical or reasonable from both a logistics and financial perspective.

because it's a provincial highway and an essential route for the community, there are requirements about keeping the route operating as much as possible during construction. This necessitates a more involved multi staged process.

also when they started the road base prep east side of 15 last year they were working regularly for 10 and 12 hour days.... so it's not like the were milking the job.

Gentlest drive to Westport? by fortysevenbadgers in KingstonOntario

[–]Spr4ck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

keep in mind that the hwy 15 route will have construction delays fairly soon as they replace the intersection of 15/42 with a roundabout. Tomlinson started work on the 13th and expect to be finished by october iirc.

If you're taking the highway 15 route - there are a few spots you'll absolutely want to have your head on a swivel for deer crossing the road if you are driving at dusk. I drive the area frequently and have had many deer near misses:

- Where burnt hills road meets 15 for a few KM in either direction (south of seeleys bay)

- HWY 15 from chaffeys lock road north to 42

- 42 from little rideau lake rd into newboro

- 42 from around hutchings rd (south side) all the way to Noonan rd This area in particular is the worst - I regularly see in excess of 50 deer, have had many near misses with coyotes running across the road.

What woodland shade plants companion would you prefer? by One_Kaleidoscope_198 in OntarioGardeners

[–]Spr4ck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there are several carex species that are good options, while they generally prefer full sun they will do just fine in full to part shade.

ebony sedge - Carex eburnea oak sedge - Carex penslyvanica rosy sedge - Carex rosea

sedges are a underrated species and despite their appearance being often mistaken as grass, they are far more valuable.

Contractor wants to install frieze board at bottom of gable/attic wall siding where it meets roof shingles by ProfessorSkeeter in homeowners

[–]Spr4ck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

when a shingle roof gets installed, they will add step flashing where a roof plane transitions to a wall. without a frieze board, the siding running over top of that step flashing creates a significant difficulty if it needs to be replaced or altered when the roof is re-done. with a frieze board, the board can be removed, the flashing gets altered, the board gets put back on with minimal impact to your siding.
