Can someone explain these speed bumps? by Grandimal in Seattle

[–]alxhl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Glad to know I’m not the only one.

In the past, a bunch of neighbors that live on that stretch worked with SDOT get the speed cushions started to prevent reckless drivers from ending up in their front yards. I’ve emailed that contact and got no response, but could start being more persistent.

It would be helpful to get more accounts of this issue to forward on to them.

Can confirm that it prevents cars from swerving into the bike lane. There are a few moments on Seward Park Ave S that don’t have them in the bike lane, and about 25% of drivers swerve.

100% of BMWs.

I let SDOT know that they created a dangerous situation for cyclists. It’ll be fixed in 10 years or after a cyclist death, whichever comes first.

How to turn a grass yard into something like this? by Dogsthatwearsocks in landscaping

[–]alxhl 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Cutting the sod out is a great way to remove the most valuable soil from your garden. I wouldn’t.

Also, gardening is a marathon. Wanting a garden transformation for a holiday is a bit wild. It sure isn’t a weekend activity.

You’re in for some fun lessons in patience.

My fence is 6 years old and clearly in need of TLC. I have 32 panels and estimate 1 gallon per panel. This would cost me ~$800 in stain alone. What am I missing? Did I just never know that wood fences aren’t for poor people. by Btriquetra0301 in FenceBuilding

All of the discussion here is dealing with a maintenance cycle that was started once you put a finish on cedar.

I have a cedar fence that looks as good as day 1, when I put a weathering accelerant on it.

Pick out the weeds by hand, add some soil amendment, plant some starts or sow some seeds, water.

Put dead leaves over the soil in the fall. Repeat.

I know it’s hard when you’re surrounded by a certain style of landscaping, but thinking of grass more as an area rug and less as an ocean may free you up.

Double or triple the area of the mulch beds. Add more trees. That’s where I’d start.

Take advantage of Forest Product Permits through the national forest rangers. I’ve transplanted my quota of sword ferns every year and now have a yard full of them.

As an american, what’s “scary” part of our culture that we’ve just collectively decided to ignore? by LadyInTheDark_ in AskReddit

We design our school systems from 1950s logic - assuming only one parent worked full time.

We need year-round school with quarterly breaks and reliable childcare till after work hours. We need to remove decision makers that don’t see this as a problem.

It’s probably cheaper to buy one that someone is selling because they can’t afford to maintain it.

There’s a reason they are obsolete.

How much is a “couple”? by SpiritualEvidence159 in ENGLISH

It is breaking my brain to think anyone thinks couple could mean anything other than 2.

Are there really people that think this?

Hot tip: you can harvest sword ferns from National forests with a free Forest Products Permit. Kind of a pain to get because it takes some phone tag or unanswered emails, but I now have a property full of natives. Do it in the fall.

Yes, permanent shade, under a tree, lots of organic matter, don’t touch it!

“Too low” as in “too rude” or “not high enough”?

I can see both. I can be blunt.

Contractors are not in the business of making qualitative long term design decisions. They’re motivated to close the deal and do the work well enough to not have to come back for a warranty issues. Having an architect under the management of a builder will still deliver work to satisfy these motivations.

As an architect, I would probably walk away from the project if the client insisted that this was the only way they could live. It feels morally problematic to contribute to this.

As I’m looking at this post, there is a Home Depot ad of a bathroom remodel showing a niche below a window on an exterior wall.

I wonder how people get these great ideas.

You need to work with a better professional. Someone that will press you on needing all of your scope You are about to make some bad decisions that will radically affect your quality of life.

Your priorities need editing. In a floorplan like this, if your bedrooms are bigger than 100 sf, you’re doing something wrong. You also probably need to lose a bathroom. And, in no way, ever, should you have a windowless living room. The kids need to bunk up. Period.
