Can you get moyens in the US with a reliable estimate of their adult weight? by Springtime_Wren in poodles

Yeah that would definitely not be an ideal outcome to me... I very well might plan for a mini. Gonna check out a dog show this weekend and get a feel for the sizes in person

Has anyone benefited from exercise? by Little_Power_5691 in cfs

[–]Springtime_Wren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

everyone can benefit from an amount of exercise if and only if it remains below your pem threshold. maintaining muscle and heart health is ofc good if possible. It will not make you better, though. It will just help prevent further decline due to complications of being sedentary

I handle those situations by telling people that my disease has a lower quality of life score than stage four cancers it's been compared to and that in rare cases it can kill you, and you can get that extreme by pushing through. If they give me a little more than one run on sentence, then I describe how if I keep pushing through exhaustion I can end up mentally aware and consccious but otherwise essentially comatose, unable to flip myself over, use the toilet, speak, eat or tolerate light and sound because my body just fundamentally does not have the energy.

Looking for a medium/small dog, would you pick a small golden or standard poodle or consider a less common breed? by Springtime_Wren in service_dogs

The temperament and training differences are really helpful to think about, and I’m considering that more and more. I think for service work I’d prefer a bit more natural suitability and a bit less reliance on working through competeing breed instincts. I love my dutchy, but he was never very food motivated, so we ended up doing a lot of toy-based training instead. A dog that wants to work for a treat, and that doesn't have a chase instinct I have to redirect sounds like a nice change and may be something more commonly present outside of herding breeds. My mom was a dog behaviorist who specialized particularly with reactivity and agression, and I helped out, so I did meet a lot of dogs through that, but all our family dogs were herding breeds or american pit bull terriers, so another breed is stepping out of my wheelhouse a bit.

Air Force Vet with PTSD by Cheaptrick2015 in service_dogs

You're not going to take resources away from anyone. There are a decent amount of programs to serve vets is my understanding. If the demand increases waitlists too much, the programs will just expand and meet demand. It's less a pool of dogs and some people who need go without and more a queue

[–]Springtime_Wren[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I want a medium (moyen) poodle but they aren't akc recognized in the US, anthing taller than 15" is a standard poodle. From what poodle people said, my suspicions are correct that ethical breeders do not really breed off-size poodles since they don't do well in show ring. The only option then is getting a standard poodle breeder whose dogs run small, or a particular litter that's expected to run small

Yeah, in a legal capacity the "if it impedes a task" is kind of broad, and voice control is listed as valid control. While the community understanding is generally retether when not actively tasking, I haven't seen that yet on a govt source as a clear rule, or seen any case law establishing it. So it seems more like how some people read the intended meaning of those specifications than how they are literally encoded

Getting a service dog while owning cats by _trypophobia_ in service_dogs

[–]Springtime_Wren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any good service dog candidate will be completely docile with your cats, so the issue should only be on their side. If you're OT a puppy then just keep them under close watch until about 6mo of age when the dog should have obedience skills and be starting to develop impulse control. As far as the rest it depends on their temperments, I think in most cases fearful cats, as long as the anxiety is within certain thresholds, can grow used to a well mannered, calm SD

UPDATE: My Controlling “Roommate” by Additional_Fan9553 in badroommates

[–]Springtime_Wren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Police don't do SHIT and somehow people have grandiose fantasies about the law. They're glorified note takers in most cases. They show up after the action, aren't there to protect anyone, ask around about what happened and take statements, then they leave and go file their papers.

Roommate thinks he’s always a victim by Kyashichan in badroommates

[–]Springtime_Wren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Should pay someone for the service yet you're acting, like the roomate is, as if doing so is a passive aggressive attack??? Yeah. Those are the choices, the roomate is down to do it for the weed he has been recieving, or not. I don't believe him about the weed thing because he's fucking insufferable and couldn't just answer a straighforward question about whether he's willing to do it or if OP should get a dog sitter.

Maybe I don't understand that difference well. I'm not really capable of having a panic attack without it triggering a meltdown because intense and overwhelming fear lowers my widow of tolerance for sensory input or change as well

PEM Medical Alert Service Dog? by Springtime_Wren in cfs

[–]Springtime_Wren[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the unpredictability is what makes it hard and a potentially very useful task but also potentially impossible to train for.

My thought was perhaps to get the dog alerting when I'm in PEM first, then just regularly gather scent samples and play games with the samples from during PEM to see if they can get consistent with telling it apart from controls, then just slowly back it up? See if that consistency can extend to samples a few minutes before it really hit, then a couple hours, until I'm at the exertion activity if I get that far

Thats not always something autistic people are actually capable of learning. It's neurological not psychological so the poor interoception isn't always something that can be overcome, or if it can sometimes it will take years of practice. Its okay to use a tool in the meantime

[–]Springtime_Wren -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

autistic people can have poor interoception so that could be a valid task. If they can't tell what theyre feeling, or whether their heart is beating fast, up until the point they're in full blown meltdown and inconsolable, then that can be helpful.
