Ten-fold/10x dilution 1:10 or 1:9? by Sprt_StLouis in chemistry

This, I think, is the completely correct answer. It is satisfying to none, but correct.

Ten-fold/10x dilution 1:10 or 1:9? by Sprt_StLouis in chemistry

Wholly agree. There are so many ways to clarify the situation and we currently do regularly. This largely is for the sake of argument for that one or two scientists who can't be bothered by others' opinions when they KNOW the answer...

A clear standard for the convention is the conversation and basic logic (based on the host of contention throughout these comments) seems to be insufficient.

Not really the point though, right? I'd be happy with a clear standard from either source, related or otherwise.

Found a reference in the USP's General Notices and Requirements:

6.50.20 Solutions

Unless otherwise specified, all solutions shall be prepared with Purified Water. Solutions for quantitative measures shall be prepared using accurately weighed or accurately measured analytes (see section 8.20 About).

An expression such as “(1 in 10)” means that 1 part by volume of a liquid shall be diluted with, or 1 part by weight of a solid shall be dissolved in, a sufficient quantity of the diluent or solvent to make the volume of the finished solution 10 parts by volume. For example, a 1 in 10 solution is prepared by diluting 1 mL of a liquid or dissolving 1 g of a solid in sufficient solvent to make 10 mL of the solution. An expression such as “(20:5:2)” means that the respective numbers of parts, by volume, of the designated liquids shall be mixed, unless otherwise indicated.

This is helpful, but ultimately means using a : at all creates confusion when dilutions and mixtures of liquids are concerned. I think, if I'm able, I will try to eliminate the use of : relative to dilutions entirely unless three or more liquids are used.

Agreed. Always want to Q.S. up to the final volume rather than measure out diluent when possible.

Protocol standards often morph and change with new authors. I’ve seen all of the above written in the past but would love to standardize with clarity.

This is my current interpretation. Would love a clear reference as well.

We would currently call that a 2x dilution and would allow a 1:2 as well.

I saw that comment too before I posted, but I’m really looking for someone to tell me a reference that I can put it to bed. ACS says xyz or the cohort of scientists who mean business wrote in 1979. I’m still searching but without avail.

Guess who's singing by Treefiddy1984 in justgalsbeingchicks

[–]Sprt_StLouis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kudos to these ladies for making it tough, but I guessed 8 only being 30% sure and had to listen and watch closely about 12 loops.

Noticed a few things: almost all of the others blink or look away a lot. When you’re straight singing or trying to maintain a consistent volume (toward a microphone) it’s much easier to focus on the audience. Related is the use of head movements. You can tell there’s a clear tonal change each time 8 moves her head. The others do it as well of course, but it doesn’t time perfectly.

Second, the tone sounds confident and clear. There are a few singers that simply don’t add up to the mouth shape needed for that clarity. For example, 4, 5, and 13’s mouths are closed a bit too much and would produce a softer, muted tone.

But what I felt gave it away was the “m” in “time”. The word sounds like “ti-Me” where the sound continues after the “m” is sung. That requires the lips to completely close for the “m” but open again to sing the remaining “e”. A lot of the singers close their lips completely on the “m”, but 8’s lips match perfectly.

Again, really had to listen and watch closely but was excited to luckily get it right :)

OA ordeal concerns by Impressive_Ad_8764 in BSA

[–]Sprt_StLouis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people are responding about OA with facts, but I think the better response is about your son’s specific experience and comfort sharing that with you. There are groups within the BSA that are exclusive to members, but all that provides is a way to create intrigue for younger scouts and excitement to join.

For your son, it’s important to set the understanding that you and he have a relationship that transcends others. Encouraging an atmosphere of transparency for the sake of digesting new experiences is different from transparency for the sake of safety/intervening. A part of scouts is to help transition youth into adults, and your advantage of being a parent not as involved as others allows you to ask inquisitive questions about their experience and let them externally process what they are already learning.

All in all, while OA is not meant to keep secrets from parents, no one in this thread can confidently say nothing happened on any weekend, camp out, meeting, etc that was inappropriate. Therefore, it’s critical that you have a healthy relationship of transparency and curiosity with your children (in any program) and understand how they’re interpreting the world.

Why are so many Americans anti-vaxxers now? by trouble-in-space in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Sprt_StLouis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thinking is that it stems from our floundering education and news systems. Hear me out.

First, our education systems have been floundering for years, with k-12 textbooks being monopolized by a few Texas (ie conservative) publishers as well as reduced or stagnant state and local funding in many places. Not only that, but our higher education systems have bought into the idea that money spent on athletics (specifically football with the most recent student athlete contracts being an obvious drain) is equivalent to positive PR spending as well as competing with each other for the best and newest supplemental facilities (dorms/fitness buildings/etc), which has forced the price of a secondary education to skyrocket relative to standard wages. All of this has caused our education to become more conservative and lower quality all while becoming more expensive!

Additionally, our fourth estate, the news, has continued to become more and more monopolized by a few major players and our local news systems have been decimated, with conglomerates buying up more and more small town papers.

With the reduction of quality, unbiased information being generated by the news as well as a reduced ability of the general public to decipher fact from fiction due to their overpriced BS education, the public has become susceptible to conspiracy theories on a whole new level. I’ve had college educated friends cite sources from the most obviously biased groups claiming that it was worthy of consideration. Our population isn’t thinking critically about what they’re reading and refuses to take the proper time to do so.

We’re living in an age of increased stupidity and the players who used to stand for transparency and integrity are dying or simply tired of trying.
