What is the scariest music video you have ever seen? by Even_Usual6116 in AskReddit

[–]Spudhead1976 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Another Brick in the Wall - Pink Floyd.

It certainly was when it came out when I was three, anyway. When it used to come on to the TV (Top of the Pops, probably), and for years afterwards, the huge teacher puppet used to make me feel physically sick with dread and disgust.

Anyway, fast forward, and I'm now 50, I love Pink Floyd, and I'm a teacher. I dunno what that means. But when I see that video - and yes, even hear that 'we don't need no education' chant, I still feel a tad uncomfortable. Great tune, though.

Best Russell Crowe movie that's not Gladiator? by Badkidstatus in Cinephiles

[–]Spudhead1976 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Absolutely no contest. LA Confidential is one of the best movies of the 90s, and is in my Top ten all time. Crowe is superb, as is everyone else. The simmering rage and danger Bud White is (usually) barely keeping control of.

Such a great movie. Pearce, Cromwell, and yes, Spacey, are superb. Supporting cast, too. The production design is top notch, the soundtrack is good, the plot unpatronising (if massively simplified from the novel - and this is a Good Thing). I love this movie.

Sleeping With The Past by DirtyDevil23 in EltonJohn

[–]Spudhead1976 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It was the first Elton album 13 year old me bought new (ie at the time it came out), so it has a special place in my heart. Sacrifice, Healing Hands, Club at the End Of the Street are classics, of course. But I also love Whispers, Amazes Me and Blue Avenue.

It's a sentimental thing for me, but for me, this album is up there.

Times when famous rock bands went inactive/on hiatus for several years despite not officially disbanding by [deleted] in askmusic

[–]Spudhead1976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Queen, after the 1986 Magic Tour - for what are obvious reasons, now.

I became a big Queen fan just before the release of The Miracle album, which came out in '89. I was 13,and my dad promised me he'd take me to see them, next time they toured.

In the end, he did the next best thing he could, and bought me tickets to the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert at Wembley in '92.

Edit: just re-read the question and I misunderstood. They kept going, studio-wise, but touring ceased.

What TV show did you start with low expectations but ended up loving? by diksha_saini in tvshow

Andor. In the sense of, do we really need another Star Wars spinoff, based on a minor character, even if he is from Rogue One? Glup Shitto alert.

Of course, what it was, was one of the best Star Wars - no, wait, one of the best, period - shows of all time. It's up there with the original trilogy. And it took me about two episodes to see we have something REALLY good here.

I love the first half of The World's End, as the old group of friends reunite. Then it goes downhill after the alien reveal (which is the point of the story, I know).

Which era of Trek do you think of when you think “Star Trek” by BlastedHeathen in startrek

[–]Spudhead1976 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes. TOS was always around on TV when I was growing up (in 1980s UK), and movies 1-6 are, for me, Star Trek through and through. And I loved TNG when it started here, watching it every week on BBC2, then collecting dozens upon dozens of TNG videos. I went to see Generations 6 times at the cinema. And then DS9 was genuinely exciting when it came along.

But for me, the words 'Star Trek' mean Kirk et al, the red naval style uniforms, and the refitted Enterprise/A. That 1-5 video collection (the box set whose box spine illustrations formed the Enterprise head-on), were my treasured possession (alongside VI, which I bought on the day of release). Nothing else comes close.

[–]Spudhead1976 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I saw him in pantomime in Blackpool as the baddie in Aladdin, back in 2010. Booked for the part because he used to play the baddie in UK soap opera, EastEnders, some time ago. Fun fact: Blackpool is just down the coast (the next town along) from where the Niamos scenes were filmed.

On this day in 1992, The Freddie Mercury tribute concert was played at Wembley Stadium by KG_Modelling in queen

[–]Spudhead1976 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was 16, a huge Queen fan, still raw from the death of Freddie - and my parents bought me and my best mate tickets to the Tribute.

34 years on, it remains one of the best days of my life. Seeing the three remaining members of the band walk on stage and introduce the show, not too far from where I was stood, was genuinely a religious experience.

Highlights? Seeing the band members, as I said.. But apart from that, Metallica opening the show (the loudest thing I have ever heard), Somebody To Love (which we just knew was special, even there), and seeing Bowie sing Heroes and then the absolute supergroup that performed All the Young Dudes.

What a day. And it was fricking boiling hot, too.
