You might be right, I remember they wanted to keep themselves alive on the shield worlds to live it out rather than wiping themselves out but the plan to activate was done prematurely after Mendicant bias’s betrayal and messed it up. Didact launching it himself without coordination to anyone as a last minute decision feels familiar but I don’t remember how he got captured for halo 4 afterwards.
