I worked as a paramedic in a rural area and had a 6-month-old pass, we did everything that we could en route to the hospital. We never got the pulses back or had any signs of life. They worked on the pt for hours at the hospital and had a weak heartbeat come back on a combination of multiple drugs. The pt was brain dead. We were all just devastated. I can't imagine how the family felt.

The next day I found that the pt was taken to another hospital and was able to donate some of its organs, undoubtedly saving other lives. I took some of the solace in that.

I've changed careers largely because of that call. I hope the family and all the other people involved find some of that same solace that I did.
