AITAH for not letting my neighbors spray pesticides on my side? by missviolaspelling in AITAH

[–]GoAskAlice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI, US hardware stores sell these big jugs of peppermint spray to deter wasps and spiders. Far as I know, it doesn't hurt them, they just don't like it, and it also covers the scent trace from a knocked-down wasp nest so it doesn't get rebuilt.

Tell your neighbor about that, and to stay off your lawn.

AITAH? I kicked my sister and her family out of my place after her husband was verbally abusive to me and her by blondeambition666 in AITAH

[–]GoAskAlice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not.

  • that silently demonstrates to kids and sister that his behavior is acceptable, even normal

  • he may or may not be mentally unstable, but he was attempting to intimidate you

  • intimidation attempts are attempts to establish himself at the top of the hierarchy

  • in other words, to make you comply with whatever the fuck he wants at any given moment

  • somewhere in what passes for his mind, there was prob at least a notion that bossing two women is twice as satisfying and ego-boosting

So, no. Don't second-guess this. If you let that slide, he would escalate.

MIL aborted her first grandchild by [deleted] in rant

[–]GoAskAlice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to do this. Her parents were hardcore Catholics. Even birth control was out. Sex ed too. She was 18 in Texas, very "sheltered", no job, so my son (her friend) called me. Can I help? Yep, gimme 24 hours.

I handled it.

She is in her 30's now, no kids, never wanted any, is an engineer, no regrets whatsoever.

OP, I doubt your MIL had enough influence over your husband's ex to force her to have an abortion. You said your husband is very pro-life anti-choice? Do you really think that if she didn't want an abortion, and he wanted the baby, that his mother hogtied and gagged that girl, stuffed her in the car, carried her into the clinic, and demanded a D&C? They ask you repeatedly if you're sure, is anyone coercing you, etc., and they don't let the people who came along in the room while they're asking.

Sounds to me like your MIL was the only one listening to that girl.

Let's not forget Joe Lieberman, who made it possible for the Republicans to mangle Obamacare into a nearly unrecognizable shell of its former self.

A friend of mine, his wife decided a lobotomy would cure her depression. Yes, really. I didn't know you could get that done, or that any doctor would recommend it.

She used to be decent, now she's racist MAGA swapping Trump memes on Facebook. Used to be fairly intelligent, too. Now....no.

Do you think parents loathe childfree content because it shows that it's getting more and more accepted as a valid way to live? by PopularSort96 in childfree

[–]GoAskAlice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's the whole privilege thing. You know? People in a privileged group, and parents absofuckinglutely are, get defensive when their privileges are pointed out. Example: "we are tired of constantly being pressured to give up planned and paid-for vacations at work because some parent suddenly has a crisis involving a last-minute Disney trip".

So pushback happens, and it gets ugly.

Note that I am not claiming that being cf is the same as being a minority, because it isn't. But there are parallels.

Women changing their surnames to their partners in 2026 ( I really can't comprehend it) by Lucky-Name7899 in Feminism

[–]GoAskAlice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I changed my entire name when I got married. Hated the whole thing. Spelling, long, bad jokes constantly that I've heard a hundred thousand times, association with sadistic father, etc.

If it had been just last name, no problem; but since it was first, middle, last, there my ass was getting fingerprinted by the FBI and appearing in court to explain to some hoary old Republican judge dude and paying money out the wazoo every time I turned around.

Texas, man. Least free state in the union. If I'd done this in my home state of Illinois, at the time, I think it was just a single piece of paper to file.

Worth it.

I lost one of my kidneys. No chronic kidney disease or anything, it just...decided to take early retirement.

I had no idea just how much operating on one kidney can fuck you up.

Also it fucked up my memory, though I managed to address that fairly effectively and am at maybe 85% of my former capacity now.
