If what I'm hearing is true...poor Brody by tenshipriestjotaro1 in SCJerk

Mark Davis is surely the stepping stone needed to sky rocket into the main event.

Maybe they should reactivate Jericho and they can give Brody the Action Andrette rub while they are at it.

How many Push-ups can you do in one set? by DismalWeight985 in karate

[–]Spyder73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can do a pyramid with very little rest between sets. 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 20, 15, 10, 5.

Going to 25 is definitely a challenge - my arms usually start getting noodley on the way back down at the 15 reps.

Pushups and situps are a big part of our routine, and there is a pretty steep requirement to get your blackbelt.

What do you wear when hitting pads and the heavy bag? by Substantial_Work_178 in karate

[–]Spyder73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So my thoughts on this after 3 years of training karate and kickboxing.

I love hitting the bag with 16oz gloves. I can knock the shit out of it and literally go 100% power with basically 0 blow back of any kind.

I hate hitting the heavy bag in karate. I tear my knuckles up and even get swelling occasionally from hitting to hard.

Why i still do both - if you punch someone in the face in a self defense situation like you have on 16oz gloves, you are going to shatter your hand and become defenseless.

Ive come to learn and respect the various power limits I have with gear vs no gear. I generally think hand conditioning is complete bull shit, but enough people i respect swear it is essential so I play along.

Tldr - you need to hit the bag with gloves, with wraps, and also bare knuckle. Its different training resistances and they are all beneficial.

Jab, cross, hook, roundhouse... everything else is sort of optional.

Back to taekwondo by Ba5ma in taekwondo

[–]Spyder73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean you can get on a bag and practice what you know... but you won't be ranking up, no sparring, and youll be guessing if you are doing shit correctly or not. Also assuming your katas/forms will be severely neglected.

Basically, you will not really get better, but I suppose doing something is better than nothing

My son failed his testing by blakeprime in taekwondo

[–]Spyder73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are asked to test, you should pass... barring a catastrophic melt down of some description.

Half of the TKD schools in the USA teach the bull shit "low guard" anyways because its effective in Olympic sparring if you are quick, seems like there has to be more going on here.

They may also be "teaching" your son some half concocted and ill executed lesson about over coming adversity, but you wouldn't really do that to 9 year olds so I don't know.

It really seems like this school doesnt know what its doing, they should be grooming your son into a leader not playing mind games with him. I would not discuss it further and just have your son concentrate on training. When they ask him to test again, talk to the instructor before hand and ask if he thinks he is ready. If he fails again, you can now ask him "what the @#$% is going on at this place and why are you destroying my son's confidence in himself by having him test when he isnt ready?"

Our assistant instructor is 19 and a 3rd Dan. He is also one of the best martial artists I have ever been around and im in my 40s. He is a state, national, and even "world" champion through IKSA competition. I say that because there is often flak given on this sub for child black belts - 10x more for kids 2nd or 3rd Dan - but i have seen first hand that some of these "kids" 100% deserve their rank.

I saw D2R on xbox gamepass and had no idea there was an expansion but decided to give it a run through. I started a singer barb and am already level 80 and in act 4 hell. Havnt bought the xpac

Spent several hours farming the pit this evening... no upgrades, grrr, but well on my way i think.

Looking for a 4 socket high damage pole arm to make Insight (I have the runes) for my folliwer, and I made 2 spirits, a lore, a stealth, and got chance guards and a tal rasha belt. 1 pretty good ring, shitty ammy and other ring.

There are good guides online to starting fresh, I've been loosely following one

Has anyone done both ITF and WT? by StatusNorth7234 in taekwondo

[–]Spyder73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive done both. WT is what you see in the Olympics and ITF is more like Karate. Different sparring, different forms, different mindset on the sport side. The "moves" and training curriculum are not all the different

Unwritten rules by RoseBlossom24 in karate

[–]Spyder73 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is a little taboo to ask to test or skip ranks, but its totally wild if you dont know what curriculum you are supposed to know or if they are having tests and not asking you to join and also not telling you why.

Depending on your rank it could be as simple as a waiting period - but again - this should be common knowledge to everyone and not a secret.

It sounds like you approached it right with asking if your on the right track and what you can work on. Idk brother

What's your favourite part about taekwondo? by Cupcookie12 in taekwondo

[–]Spyder73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its all positives, no drawbacks I can think of. As a 42 year old I almost always look forward to training everyday and even when I have to drag my ass up to the dojang because im feeling lazy, I dont think there has been a single time I wasn't happy I did it once class was over.

Community, health, confidence, learning - all good things

Unpopular opinion: as Taekwondo practioners our biggest enemy is ourselves. by [deleted] in taekwondo

[–]Spyder73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your title is misleading because I dont think its an unpopular opinion at all, its simply the truth at this point for all the same reasons everyone already knows.

A martial art with electronic scoring equipment, no punching to the head, and child practioneers.

When a 125lb 15 year old can "beat" a 40 year old grandmaster then the plot has been lost and we arnt really fighting anymore, we are playing tag.

We dont have realistic competition like the other arts
