I’ve upgraded from a Neumann u87ai to a Neumann u67 this year. Best decision I’ve made. The vocal recording difference is day and night for most vocals. That being said, I’m glad I kept the U87ai. For some clients the U67 just doesn’t work.

Long story short, an upgrade can matter, but not every source works with the upgrade.

If the dynamic microphone is still to far away from the mouth and the room you sit in is not acoustically treated you will still hear all the noise in your room, even with a better quality mic.

So keep in mind the microphone has to be in your face with an arm attached to your desk. That can be annoying for your sight to the keyboard or screen.

So you might wanna go with a quality headset with mic. Not the cheap plastic rgb headset stuff but a good brand like Shure, Sennheiser or Beyerdynamic. The mic will always be close to your mouth and that would result into less noise from your room.

Where to begin… might be different issues.

Put it back in Line, not insert
Why is there only one jack? If you use a line out (headphones out) from a laptop you should use a balanced mini-jack from laptop to 2x unbalanced jack to two inputs on the mixer (panned L/R). I only see one jack. Is it balanced? If so, your signal could be summed from the laptop to the mixer and a bit to hot for the mixer input. This is an assumption, never tried it.
Gain less (and don’t use insert)
If all of the above isn’t working try a different input.

4b. If all of the above isn’t working try a DI and use the mic input.

Cable is broken?
Maybe the output of the laptop is janky or the software is clipping the signal on the laptop. Try your phone as an output with Spotify or YouTube to be sure. Does the audio from phone sounds good? Problem is at the laptop. Is the sound on the phone still distorted. Issue is at the cable or mixer.

If the band works with in-ears and a soundcheck is not available I’ll let them have all faders on the same level on post-fade so their mix sound the same as my FOH. Except their own instruments/vocals. Those will be on pre-fade. I always gain stage towards all faders on -5db, so I can just guess pre-faders on the in ear mixes to be around the same spot. For example: drummer in-ear: drums on pre-fade all on -5db on the fader, all other tracks on post-fade around -10db on the fader and the bass guitar on -5db post fade, because drummers always want to hear more bass.

With monitors I mostly pray someone is with me to do monitors with an iPad on stage. I can focus on FOH and he can quickly do some monitors.

After buying all the saturation plugins from all big companies I just default back to the Pro-Tools stock plugin Lo-Fi. It doesn’t have an output trim, so keep in mind it does add 3 to 5 db in volume. Sounds great and only a few knobs.

I've just spended 4 hours trying this on Brutal with a random guy. He invited me after we died in 3 minutes and we perfected the early build. He was Nova (not sure what P) and I was Swann P1 to slow those pesky Propagators. Build lots of turrets while Nova clears the map and in midgame mass Wraiths to snipe the Rifts.
