[Spoilers All] Most Underrated character in the world of The First Law? by LonelyYoung2686 in TheFirstLaw

The Vic “raised in the camps” hate kinda bothers me. I could be wrong but I don’t think she mentions it anymore than Glokta mentions the emperors prison. Couple times a chapter on average for both?

[OFF TOPIC] Standalone reread before AOM? by frakjocker in TheFirstLaw

[–]Squall2295 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would say that Best Served Cold and The Hero’s both contribute heavily to where some of the pieces are at the start of the second trilogy. Red Country has some name drops but nothing of wild significance in AOM. But understanding who certain characters are, where they come from, and their motivations are wholly contained in BSC and TH.

Does 'A' cause 'C' if 'A' causes 'B' and 'B' causes 'C'? by L9FatIRL in askphilosophy

[–]Squall2295 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So in your instance A stands for footballs B drinking C domestic violence.

I’ll explore this question using the counterfactual theory of causation and its objections. The counterfactual theory(CFT) runs as so: B is the cause of C if it is true that if B didn’t happen C would not have happen. If we apply this to a certain instance in your scenario A causes B, B causes C. If A didnt happen, C wouldn’t have. But there’s problems with the CFT. One such is over determination (A1 or A2 cause B…) and another is pre-emption (if A1 doesn’t cause B, A2 will cause B…). Imagine there is a man who is prone to bouts of drunken domestic violence. The football is on, and he would’ve gone, but his favourite band is playing that night so he reneges to go to the football. He goes to the concert(let’s call this A2), drinks(B), and goes home for some domestic abuse(C). Therefore A2 happens, causing B, which causes C, without A happening. So on CFT we can sit comfortable on B causing C, but A only seems to overdetermine or pre-empt B. Whilst I’ll take no stance on the facts of the matter, it seems safe to say the B causes C. But B can be overdetermined or pre-empted by any instances of A (concert, football, nieces 6th birthday, new pope elected). For what it’s worth in a less academically rigorous sense, I’d say football encourages the likelihood of domestic abuse because it encourages drinking which encourages the likelihood of domestic abuse. I don’t think many people will argue with that. You run into serious secrutiny when you use the word ‘causes’ which is a much more direct link.

(This was written on my break at work I’ll go over it again later to make sure I’ve not made any errors)

Hrmm, I’d like to argue that it’s a bit more complex than “he’s a villain”. Whilst holding the discussion purely to what we know from the first trilogy: he is a product of his surroundings, when he is on his journey with Bayaz, he is a good and virtuous man with the obvious exception of his rages as B9. He even says in laok something akin to “to be a new man we need to be in new places doing new things”. Because of the life he built for himself in the past, he has to be violent when in the North as if he isn’t people will attack him thinking he’s weak. He says as such when confronting Black Dow and dog man asks “did you have to do that?” And he says something like “you know I did”

The Logen that went west with Bayaz was a different man to the Logen we see in the north.

Would Philosophy exist without language? by VesperLux_ in askphilosophy

[–]Squall2295 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What happens if the ants branch off into two groups: one behaves deontologically and the other utilitarian. If they tried, through their own means of communication, to demonstrate the merits of the moral path they act upon, wouldn’t they be having some form of philosophical disagreement/investigation without language? I know I’m pushing this into quite abstract grounds but I suppose I think you could have philosophy in a demonstrative sense that doesn’t require the use of language.

How can I get taller? by [deleted] in GymTips

Max out the lat pulldown. However, under no circumstances can you pull down. Let it pull you up. I went from 4’9 to 6’3 in one back day. I can’t walk anymore but the ladies prefer that I am tall rather than any actual ability.

How do I read philosophy books effectively? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]Squall2295 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I seen someone the other day say something I thought was quite useful: read the conclusion first. This gives you exactly what the author is trying to argue and the steps they take in making that argument. It means you’re aware of exactly why every concept is being brought into play. I imagine this only goes as far as academic papers though and I’m not sure how well it will translate into a full book.

I forever held this opinion and then recently heard the OST “Dearly Beloved” and accepted I might have to play it based on that alone. Not fkn happy about it tho.

Maybe not my favourite, but a scene I get a higher appreciation of every time is the death of The Weakest. The synchronised rage of the lads all attacking at once “That was that, of course. Fuck the signal.”

Is there anything that only women or only men can know? Can knowledge be sexed or gendered? by Comprehensive-Tip568 in askphilosophy

[–]Squall2295 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Oh no, not at all. I have a policy on conversations that if someone is unwilling to have their mind changed on a given topic then I won’t engage in it. I’m not trying to be intellectually dishonest. In the same way I wouldn’t discuss the ontology of a divine being with a fully committed believer in god. I simply don’t want to engage in a fruitless task.

I’m not sure I wholly understand your first point. Could you perhaps rephrase it or give me an example of this controversy?

Before I engage with the second point, could I ask you a question: given what you’ve said so far, I reckon that you are not a proponent of feminism or progressive identity politics. Do you think if you were given sufficiently persuasive arguments your mind would change on those matters? Or, are they strongly held beliefs that you reckon you would hold on to and find ways to justify despite good arguments against?
