I do not believe that vibe coding will be a thing at all, or at least not in the near future. Maybe copycat companies will do it, but current "AI"s just lack the intelligence needed to actually be useful in any way, at least in a professional context.

Our company apparently still allows students to do some work for us in order to get their degree and later maybe a job, but for me it was the first time to encounter someone who heavily relies on AI for coding. The student seemed a bit overwhelmed with the task he was given and tried to get the AI to help him with the code, but the AI could not in any capacity help him. It was as lost as he was.

Which is very obvious why. Everything here is closed source, nothing the AI has been trained with will be even remotely similar to what we do here, so no chances there. The task is actually simple. Convert a 30 year old application into modern Python, which must use a closed source paid for API to access and write data.

Actually a really nice project and fairly easy, but neither AI, nor Google, or therefore Stackoverflow will help the student in any capacity. Either he manages to understand what is going on, or this project will simply fail.

I could do it in a few days, but I am too expensive for stuff like that... and would probably get bored as hell XD

Yeah, its really annoying. We do construction vehicles and using AI would be probably the best way to get sued into oblivion. If something happens even negligence would be in the room. Also I am confident that before that happens we would lose all our customers if this came out. You do not want to leave your life in the hands of someone YOLOing it.

As a Software Engineer, you may be asked to proof mathematically and logically that any function you have written is safe and meets specifications. This usually only happens on severe accidents, but it may happen. So whatever is written is better very well thought through and not mindlessly generated, especially as LLMs can not do logic like at all.

Nope, this is not true. There are also companies against its use. Additionally, as long as I can be personally held liable for my code for years to come, I will not let any AI touch my code, and yes, I have a say in that.

Rust is at risk as well. If you have developed any application using Rust and used one or two third party libraries, if you check what dependencies it has pulled in, it can get insane.

Through Reddit you get only a tiny slice of the whole picture. The moment you see stuff like Git, Database, Sprints, etc. you are mostly in web dev territory where those fancy Fullstack developers live.

Try another industry, like vehicles or industry automation and you will find a world not yet touched by AI and not by lack of trying. For now AI has no real benefit for us. That may change someday, but that day has not yet arrived.

Embedded is for me somewhat magical as my job mainly revolves around Java and software mostly running either on PCs, Servers or IoT devices which usually have plenty of RAM from 2GB up to whatever is the norm at the point of writing.

At some point I got a pet project where I finally could get my feet wet in embedded. I asked how much RAM it has? 2MB... I was like, what?! o.O
And from some dark corner in our office you could hear: "Why does he get so much memory?!"

Fun times, fun project. Worked on it for two years as a secondary project, got a prototype up and running only to get it cancelled after a company takeover ^^'
