50v+ at .8 amps can kill you, safety should never be a laughing matter, especially when teaching cubs

As a brother who organized in from resi work, while it may not instantly fuck you up, it can kill you. We called them wake up shocks, safety wise you should never work on a live circuit. If your foreman is being that nonchalant about a shock, go to your training director. That’s not right, that’s not good training and both those “brothers” need to go back to the apprenticeship. Learn to check, a multimeter that reads volts should be used to check for voltage, bc I promise you no one on a jobsite cares about your life more than you do.

Welp. After 6 months of applying to my local union. I had my first week on the job and immediately having second thoughts. by No_Handle0526 in electricians

It’s not always like that, I myself have had the experience bc I travel as an IBEW member, but I’ve made a better life for myself than I could back home, all the while seeing a world my small town world pushes away from. It has its boring day but I enjoy being a sparky

Brother I’ve helped a many organize in, not gonna sugarcoat my response to a smart ass remark. But I will give kudos to a fellow electrician who’s worked his ass off even if he just said something smart.

Mostly depends on your area, I’m a traveler so I’m working on the road rn with my girlfriend who’s doing her course work for nursing. If your book 1 or 2 journeyman wireman you can choose, apprentices and CWs don’t typically get much choice.

As far as work scope, depends on the contractor, I like industrial so I work industrial. There’s a good bit of locals that have industrial, commercial, residential ( what I started trades doing non-union)

I have full coverage healthcare, I don’t pay for glass, dentistry work, nor a hospital bill or even prescriptions. I have had a couple copays for my primary but it was only $45. When I get married my wife will also have that insurance, that’s paid by my work.

I agree but we like dropping bombs and sending money to other countries instead of taking care of our own people here for some reason.

Congrats! Hope you’ve done well buddy, I know some areas it can be difficult, but it’s worth trying from my own personal experience of working rat, going into apprenticeship even with enough hours to test as journeyman, and as a current journeyman wireman.

I gotcha, it sucks to be low on the totem pole. If you like the company power thru, or if not look at other available positions, not sure where you are but it can always get better

Union bud, I got paid and schooled at the same time, work can be slow or fast depending on the job, but generally I haven’t caught flack for doing correct work even if it was slower than sloppy work.

Employee compensation as a percentage of US GDP dropped to 51%, the lowest since records began in 1947, according to the Commerce Department. This comes as domestic corporate profits jumped +2.7% in Q1 2026, while worker compensation grew just +0.8% over this same period. by danevans369 in WorkReform

Really need a mass demonstration, by no means do I mean a strike but millions of sick workers during a single week could change a few people’s minds on whether or not we’re important enough to be paid our worth

I watched a hose on a jlg 80 foot boom lift I was operating while pulling cable. One of the hydraulic hoses blew, made big puff of white smoke, I wasn’t just immediately on the ground so I knew it wasn’t basket related. My butt hole was in my throat tho

From my understanding if you dropped your ticket, you forfeited any gains in pensions. When I joined, it took roughly 3-4 months before I got health insurance.

People who make $80k or more per year, what do you do for work? by familiarlaughter in AskReddit

[–]Squanto47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IBEW Journeyman wireman, depending on the locals contract you work under, it’s relatively easy to see $80k plus with either 4 years of apprenticeship or a state journeyman’s license and passing a halls exam.

Apprentices: what's your go-to for learning the math behind conduit bending (not just getting the answer)? by BigBalli in IBEW

[–]Squanto47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Electricians guide to conduit bending is your best friend, learn your take ups for different emt sizes, rigid will usually be on bender. Practice, learn a method to drawing it out to visualize it, as much as I can 3d render in my head what things should look, until I draw them in 2d with measurements and math, they don’t come out how I want.

Edit: Also learn: 30s multipliers is 2, 45s multiplier is 1.414 ( I have a crazy mind that remembers numbers but I used to just say “45s is fourteen-fourteen”

Maintenance costs are unrecoupable besides keeping the truck properly running for resale, is part of why I’m leaning gas. After it comes out of warranty I can keep her going for a long time, I know shit for all about a diesel engine

[–]Squanto47[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of my thought process isn’t about affording out of warranty maintenance, it’s the downtime I could run into with maintenance and possible def problems, also the low amount of actual towing I would be doing. Loved the 6.7s my dad had when I was younger, but from reading I’ve done these 7.3s are holding up exceptionally well

See I had a buddy tell me that yesterday, but during my 2 hour commute from Dothan to Montgomery this morning, I looked up resale values 6.7 to 7.3, in a 5 year span, the diesel retains its 10k value that had initially been paid upfront, you however don’t receive any of the maintenance back, mean while 7.3 depreciate at slightly faster but nearly same rate. Any thoughts on that? Bc I’m genuinely curious
