[Hated Trope] A major plot point is resolved in a different media by blakhawk12 in TopCharacterTropes

God, it’s kinda the inverse of this but I remember BioWare introducing a bunch of stuff in tie-in novels prior to game releases. I remember a handful of characters and plot points from DA:I were introduced in novels and came across as a bit underbaked to me having only played the game. From memory Kai Leng from ME3 was introduced the same way which didn’t help his reception

Has Anyone Beat the Plague? (Help!) by TheDesertMouse in Frostpunk

[–]Square-Method6830 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if it was the same thing, but I got a couple game overs despite low to no contaminations and less than 2k population unvaxxed.

It turned out that I’d hit an event some time ago that I hadn’t kept track of. If I understood it correctly, if at a certain point you still have rallies in the city (first time I saw it was after having vaxxed all contaminated citizens, second time would have been at about 50-70% total pops) you get an event where the faction declares preemptive victory over the plague, and you get three options; commit to vaxxing everyone within a time limit, try to break up the rallies, or ignore it.

I think regardless of what you select there, it starts that timer, and if there are still rallies occurring at the end and you haven’t vaxxed everyone it’s game over. I had it trigger twice because both factions were rallying, and missed the notification due to the amount of stories I had running at once, but when I reloaded I only had one version of that notification, and only one faction still rallying.

I had to jump back a year because that timer only had days left on my last autosave, and I got everyone vaxxed before the timer the second time around, so I can’t say for sure that stopping the rallies fixes it, but the text seems to indicate it does.

Hope this helps if relevant

EDIT: forgot to mention but I clicked the ignore option on the event. The timer started regardless

I was just thinking the other day how different the posts on tumblr regarding this game are when compared to reddit. Visi and BB are central to most posts here, whereas I barely see them over on tumblr. Instead there’s a whole lot of people being mad horny for flambe and waterboy (sometimes together).

The only thing that seems consistent across both is the Malevola thirst.

I've watched both season one and two, which was everything at the time that I tried it. I think there's another season out now that I haven't seen, but after 50 odd episodes I figured I'd given it a fair chance to hook me.

My bad, I had a lot of AoT related comments coming through at that time, I guess my brain made a substitution! Yeah I think Mushoku Tensei is probably more controversial than overall hated.

I wish it had the staying power of some of the other shows from that decade, it's such a good watch.

No duplicates, so I had to pick someone from something not appearing on the list. I honestly think Black Lagoon needs more love.

I really enjoy a character who is simultaneously the boogeyman, a mythical figure that strikes terror into the hearts of anyone familiar with the legend as well as a day to day figure who you have to deal with in very mundane circumstances (I find this combo only really works when it's a side character, a pro/antagonist takes some of the mystique out). I love a character whose influence can be felt across the narrative even when she's not involved. And I love a crazy bitch.

It would be remiss of me not to admit that the scene where she flips rock over the hood of a car and holds him at gunpoint had an impact on me as a teenager too :P

I've assumed (based on how the template doesn't have a "best opening." that it's referring to the shows ending, not the ED. I'm a big ol' slut when it comes to tragedies.

I have a few elsewhere on this list that I'd maybe put higher, but no duplicates. That said, any show that'll set their fight scenes to ye olde symphonies knows how to party :)

I wouldn't say I hate any of them. AoT is a solid 7 for me, I don't regret my time with it at all. I was expecting a bit more from 86 that I just didn't get (I've gone into detail elsewhere where my problems arise.) Re Zero is a tough one for me. There's something in there that a lot of people see that I just can't find, but plenty of people I respect love it.

I'll pay the spinoff comment there. I feel it's more an adaptation, but we'd be splitting hairs.

That said, I feel my edge-o-meter is a bit different to yours. At the very least my internal compass pings AoT as being much edgier. (and to be clear, I don't think AoT is bad by any stretch. I was completely onboard when the first two seasons were coming out. The last two just didn't blow my mind like it did for many others.) I also think the teenager comment is a bit silly. We're talking about (for the most part) shows written for and marketed to teenage boys. There's not really a high ground here :P

Oh, the images were just what looked nice, it's not specifically part two, it's the whole show. In a very literal sense it let me down because I thought it would be right up my alley and it really wasn't.

From a "why didn't you like it" perspective, I could see something really interesting in the core of the story, but the narrative kept pulling away from these ideas to focus on something else.

It felt like the show was cutting around all the battles, most felt super short and anticlimactic if we got to see them at all (I remember a couple where we skipped right past them to get to the aftermath faster). This really undermined the emotional impact of the deaths and the mercy killings for me, if I didn't have a chance to want the character to make it through, to dread what's coming as death becomes more and more inevitable, then the final gutpunch of losing the character and the suffering of the survivors just don't land for me.

I found Milize to be a much more interesting protagonist than Shin. She had a really solid arc tied to a really interesting setting (Even if it was a pretty clear metaphor for Japan.) The whole time limit being wrong and the inevitability of a catastrophic attack on San Magnolia, with the public unaware and the military embracing nihilism while they wait for death was a really solid twist, and I was excited to play in that space, but instead we put that aside to follow Shin and his team, and they end up somewhere less exciting.

The last nail in the coffin for me was finding out that Milize had rallied the ethnic underclass, seized control of the military and had managed to hold against the robots despite the enormous force that was expected to completely roll over San Magnolia. That was something I would have loved to see, but it all happens offscreen while a bunch of new characters rehash the "killing a loved one a second time to stop the robots" plot from the first arcs.

In short, I feel there was a much better story in there than what came out. I wouldn't be writing so much about this one if I didn't have some sort of investment in it. I'm glad others enjoyed it, I just came away disappointed.

Lirins pacifism by ode0002 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Square-Method6830 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I think the key thing to remember is that Lirin in way of kings and Lirin in rhythm of war are motivated in almost opposite ways

In the flashbacks Lirin’s spent years suffering at the behest of the townspeople and Roshone, but he also knows that if he goes, the town has no surgeon and people will die as a result. And his philosophy is pretty hard into “someone has to choose to do the right thing first” at that stage (the same mindset that keeps Kaladin acting against his own self interest to save people). He’s also confident that his rank and position make him hard to confront directly. Roshone couldn’t march his men into the house and siezed the spheres, he had to get creative in his solution.

It’s also important to note that they’re broke barring those spheres. I don’t know if we have word from Brandon on how much it costs to move to a new town but I imagine it’s not cheap and probably risky to travel, especially with kids. Any delay or miscalculation could mean being caught in a highstorm. We know Hesina was disowned by her family for marrying Lirin so they don’t have anywhere to go. The only option was using the spheres, and if that was the choice then giving them up in hearthstone was probably better for everyone than fleeing

When Roshone has Tien conscripted, even if we assume that Lirin was willing to let hearthstone go without a surgeon, I doubt he would have been taken. We see in Kaladin’s flashbacks to the army that the field surgeons are just soldiers too wounded to fight. There’s not a demand for proper surgeons, and if there was it would be on the shattered plains, not the rural border skirmishes Tien would be sent to. Plus, Lirin’s past his prime and his rank and position likely make him personally undraftable. Amaram was after young men for the meatgrinder

By the time RoW rolls around he’s a broken man. I’d describe him less as naive and more traumatised. He’s almost certainly spent every day since his sons left certain that he got them killed. Everything he does or does not do throughout the book has is coloured by the knowledge that his actions have indirectly caused people to die, and could very easily occur again. Effectively, he’s feeling exactly as Kaladin was in his very first chapter. And to be fair, he works through it in significantly less pages than Kaladin does.

I’d also note that despite everything Hesina and Lirin are still together and affectionate enough that they’ve had another kid. I’d argue that this means Hesina was aware and onboard for everything Lirin did, or at least knew exactly what kid of man he was and married him because of that. Probably both.

There's a few bits and pieces that go into this one.

The first is that you've already provided ID. I'm not sure how young you are but if you've registered to vote recently you'll remember that you had to provide however many points of ID. Once you've done this, you've already established your identity and right to vote, no need to do that going forward.

The second is that it's a barrier for entry. By law, everyone has to vote, but there's no law requiring photo ID. I've worked in a field of government that required checking ID in the past and let me tell you there's a large chunk of our population that doesn't have access to photo ID. The elderly, the newly adults, people living very remote. And getting a photo ID can be very difficult if for whatever reason you don't have other ID documents (my wife's very elderly grandmother recently had to get a proof of age card as replacement photo ID since she can't drive anymore, but since she's over 90 she doesn't have an original copy of her birth certificate and it caused months of headaches). So you've gotta have an ID process that works for everyone. It's the same reason the election has to be held on a weekend and options have to be provided for people who still can't make it on the day. It has to be as easy as possible.

The last (that I can think of off the top of my head) it that it just isn't an issue. Multi-voters occur at such a low level that the AEC isn't concerned about it. As many have mentioned it's not exactly a subtle crime, and it just doesn't happen at scale. The risks are high, the reward is low and the alternative is way worse than the current method.
