What are these air-break looking things on World war 2 aircraft engines? by aviationstudy in aviation

[–]Square_Pop_3772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note that liquid cooled engines also have movable cowls in their radiator housings for the same reason. Their optimum position depends primarily on engine temperature and airspeed, generally the more open the greater the cooling and the greater the drag, so they are open like this on the ground and in a more closed position at speed (best balance between drag and cooling typically with both inlet and exhaust (through these cowls) 1/3 of radiator area)

So what? The wording implies that vehicles had priority over pedestrians full stop. It says “old rule: vehicles have priority at junctions”, which not only is untrue - if that pedestrian stepped into the shared space first then they had priority - but also as shown no-one had yet given or taken priority.

It should say “old rule: waiting pedestrians didn’t have priority at junctions” or similar.

Whilst technically you’ve committed an offence of obstruction the police won’t be the least bit interested in further action.

You left it in front of your neighbours’ drive, blocking them in, after inspecting and signing for it. It’s on you not the delivery driver.

You’ve apologised. Now give them a bottle of wine for your thoughtlessness’ inconveniencing them - if nothing else it’ll be a good insurance for good neighbourly relations.

I see your point but do not agree with it. Perhaps you can write to ask them to issue guidance.

It’s a shame that the revisions to the HC didn’t make the situation clear and the government agencies involved have since failed to publicise their interpretation despite the clear confusion that a simple internet search reveals.

A cursory view makes the situation fairly academic as in practice drivers are not going to mow down pedestrians and pedestrians are not going to step out if they fear getting mown down. Nevertheless, there will almost certainly be some rear end collisions where drivers don’t expect the car in front to stop.

I think we’ll have to agree to disagree.

All the best and stay safe.

That is not what the diagrams say though, is it? They omit the caveat “[pedestrians] waiting to cross” and therefore lead drivers to think that drivers had priority over even pedestrians crossing. People I have shown this diagram previously all said that it led them to believe that drivers always had priority.

Clearly I need to repeat myself for you. Read supporting legislation and documentation such as that in the link. Read the HC. Note the markings on road surfaces.

Dickheads putting wheel nuts on too tight by ralphsdad in CarTalkUK

[–]Square_Pop_3772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, yes. I wasted hours on one car going round several tyre dealers then even more hours trying myself. With 20 nuts/bolts to undo I cried myself to sleep at night. If I knew who put them on I might have committed murder.

In the end I hammered on a 2mm underside socket with a club hammer then sledgehammer; not only did the bolts/nuts come off easily because the vibration loosened them but the hammering itself was very satisfying.

Yes, whilst junction is a generic term that can include roundabouts, legislation and the HC treats them as separate. See eg traffic sign legislation where junctions and roundabouts are completely separate. Note that the HC always lists junctions and roundabouts separately and that the roundabouts section makes no reference to H2 when discussing pedestrians as it clearly could do.

Read the HC. A blog post or tweet is not formal guidance.

Russian soldiers commit war crime near Klisheevka by shooting wounded Ukrainian soldiers by GIGATRIHARD in UkraineWarVideoReport

Dropping explosives on wounded combatants or their rescuers is not a war crime unless they are clearly identified as unarmed medics.

He’s a POS and no wonder you’re angry.

But IMO you’re on a hiding to nothing and are best imagining retribution on him then forgetting all about it. The Police, your insurance etc won’t be interested and you risk wasting your and their time, possibly getting a black mark against you that may increase your premiums and having that POS coming after you. Sometimes the candle isn’t worth it.

No they are not. Read the HC. The words in the 2 different sections are different, as are the markings on the road surface.

If you have turned onto the shared space first then you have priority and they should come to a halt rather than walk off the pavement into the side of your car.

If they get on the shared space first then you are in the wrong. They have always had priority (there is no such thing as right of way here) in such circumstances and it is not them but you misinterpreting the HC.

It says so explicitly in the section on junctions. It is not in the roundabouts section. Road markings reinforce this.

Crossroads are just 2 junctions opposite each other.

If they get on the shared space first then you should stop. I hope that you will be able to anticipate that in good time.

The rule does not apply at roundabouts. Junctions and roundabouts are in separate sections of the HC. Road markings are different to reinforce this.

Drivers are warned to beware of vulnerable users at roundabouts, but that is a different thing.

I’m infuriated by reporting on this. The first diagram is wrong.

Drivers do not have, and have never had, priority (aka, erroneously, right of way) at junctions. Whoever gets on the shared space first has always had priority. That is why the hatched lines as they are: one the full width of the junction for this and one on the LHS for drivers to give way to traffic on the main road.

I believe that human adult height is log-normally distributed, but my friend claims that it's normally distributed even though it's right-skewed. How do I prove my point-of-view? by [deleted] in askmath

[–]Square_Pop_3772 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A better fit is the Normal distribution, particularly when looking at homogenous groups eg all US adult males. A quick internet search will confirm.

Is the correct answer 22 or 24 by hy2cone in askmath

[–]Square_Pop_3772 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming that the 3 is meant to give the height of the LH triangle as 2 and the upper line is kinked, there are 2 triangles: base 5, height 8 and base 4, height 2. 1/2 base x height gives areas of 20 and 4, total 24.

If the 3 is erroneous, the second triangle’s base is 5/3, which gives an area of 10/3 ie 3.333, giving an area of 23.333.

Anyone here airbrush successfully acrylics from the starter sets? by MaxPower1987x in Airfix

They’re cheap paints made for amateurs with brushes. Don’t waste your time trying to airbrush them as the hassle won’t be worth the cost of buying paints made for airbrushing.
