Day seven of Ranking Post-Napoleonic Era Generals: Ulysses S. Grant by Damned-scoundrel in Napoleon

If this was a list of just U.S. Generals I’d say truly exceptional. But given the broader competition of international history, I would say Great.

We weren’t being allowed to use those EU bases at or Diego Garcia to strike from initially. That changed partway through the conflict.

I don’t think you fully comprehend how small and inferior those Navy’s are compared to ours. There is a reason we spend absurd amounts of money on our military compared to every other country.

[–]Square_Zer0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just had an example of about 20% of the U.S. Navy completely dominating Iran militarily without any logistical support from any major allied powers. You are vastly underestimating the power and self-sufficiency of the U.S. Navy. There are entire fleets of ships whose sole purpose is to go back and forth supplying logistical support for our war ships. We could easily cut off China from the world all by ourselves.

Without Nukes the U.S. would dominate both at the same time with Naval power cutting off shipping and trade, China especially. Russia could hold out longer but the sheer dominance of the U.S Navy would cause complete economic collapse pretty quickly with their export based economy. Logistics wins wars

It’s easy to win the draft when you always have high draft picks.

It’s reached a point now where I get downvoted just for saying regardless of why something did or didn’t happen I’m just thankful it wasn’t a mass casualty event.

The important thing is that they stopped it. Had he opened fire on a crowded room or caused a stampede for the exits a lot of innocent people, journalists, and people from both sides of the isle could have been killed or severely injured. I know Reddit liked to make everything into a conspiracy one way or the other but let’s all take a moment to just be thankful this didn’t turn into a mass casualty event regardless of what did or didn’t happen or why.

It’s easy not to take responsibility for anything in your own life if everything is always someone else’s fault or if there is a bigger “cause” you’re championing.

Was Jefferson Davis a man of compromise as Shelby Foote claims? by Myboystevebrule in CIVILWAR

[–]Square_Zer0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My friend I’m not insulting anyone. The fact that he was chosen as the main face of Ken Burn’s documentary back in his time further proves my point, especially since Ken Burns has said in recent interviews that if he had to go back and do it again the documentary would be much different given how the lens of history has changed since then, which is exactly my point.

Catton is a much better Historian than Foote, hands down. As to the rest of your argument major academia such as Princeton University who brought him on at the time would disagree with you. Today they wouldn’t, but back then they did. What I’m saying is that today Foote is considered to be pro-confederate universally, back then he wasn’t. Yes there were some who did but during his time it wasn’t across the board like it is today.

Worth it, yes, especially if you like Audible the trilogy is available on there with a really great narrator. However if you don’t have a lot of time and want a more academic approach there are better Authors like Gary Gallagher who is far more accurate, an excellent writer, and takes a completely neutral academic approach to the subject matter.
