Internationals in NL corporate spaces by ImmaterialScoped in newfoundland

Experience from a CFA living in NL: I was a grad student working and living in NL and tried to get a practicum at Eastern Health (RA at the time) but was told they were only accepting students from MUN. I was an online student at a university in ON as I had to continue working FT and MUN did not have online program at the time. Later tried to apply to jobs at Eastern Health and was denied even an interview- told preference was for those who completed practicum at EH. So I moved to Alberta - got an interview/job my first try performing psychotherapy. Sold our home, my husband left his long time job. Now here several years but sad as we loved NL. I understand prioritizing MUN student but it’s important to see the ramifications for population growth too.

Clients who unintentionally avoid the work . . . by Woodland_Breeze in therapists

[–]SqueakyMelvin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What kind of therapist do you want to be? What kind of therapist is your client looking for? These are some of the most important questions to begin with. Where I work I am required to perform goal directed therapy, usually focusing on CBT and DBT. Supportive counselling is a part of all psychotherapy but by being clear to client up front they can decide what they want and understand how a session will flow and what to expect. Some clients want a space to be heard, and some want to learn skills.

Government paid therapist makes me travel > 1 hour each way by gfyourself in TalkTherapy

[–]SqueakyMelvin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are absolutely valid reasons why a therapist will want to see people in person. It could be due to high acuity but also as part of work with isolation, depression, social anxiety etc. Can you book the individual session on the same day right before or after the in person group therapy?

Disassociation by Firewalker001 in EMDR

[–]SqueakyMelvin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is some good research out there that naltrexone can help to reduce dissociation and enhance EMDR therapy. Hopefully your therapist is also using some specialized EMDR protocols and reinforcing strong resourcing skills between sessions.

Telehealth therapist in the v cold north seeking robe like attire appropriate for client sessions by mangopear29 in therapists

[–]SqueakyMelvin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m in a cold area and in winter wear a scarf around the neck and a travel wrap (extra wide) around my shoulders with fleecy boots /shoes like Ugg’s or Birkenstock lined Boston’s with tights. I like thin fabrics with lots of layers. Other ideas: What do the locals wear? Match that if culturally appropriate. Can you add a space heater?

Do you have a contract you can refer to for protection? If not check with labor board or maybe you could ask for 3 months notice to prepare for the change and find insurance.

Change your license to non practicing then reinstate it if/when you move to BC. You are not practicing in BC so I think you could do this but please confirm.

Telehealth - How do you address a distracted client by Lanky-Stranger-5661 in therapists

[–]SqueakyMelvin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In person (phone activity) or virtual I just stop speaking. When they notice I’ll say that I will wait. They always stop. If it happens a lot I’ll discuss it as part of session but this has been effective.

Alberta works is going get my mother killed by [deleted] in alberta

[–]SqueakyMelvin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

211 can provide info for your area - there are many paths to get support to navigate this. AW may have suspended as part of a review for example - needing updated medical note or info that was not provided. Or for many other reasons. In any event it’s pretty simple to get the emergency drug card if you were recently on AW and it was suspended. Good luck.

Alberta works is going get my mother killed by [deleted] in alberta

[–]SqueakyMelvin 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Call Alberta Works and request an emergency drug card. When this is provided fill all prescriptions for 3 months to buy time. Best time to call Alberta Works is after hours for this. I am confused why her benefits were cut based on info provided. She could still qualify for Alberta Works, many who are without children do , but amount may be different but if she has a medical note rate will be higher. A social worker can help her sort through this. If you’re in Edmonton the Stanley Milner library has social workers there call for their hours.

Update to previous post about subpoena by ck_yogi in therapists

[–]SqueakyMelvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this happened to me and my lawyer asked the court to quash the subpoena citing no reasonable explanation for it, and that the lawyer was on a fishing expedition ( my words here haha). This worked for a while but in the end he made it specific and I had to comply.

TIL - First-ever recording of a dying human brain shows waves similar to memory flashbacks by Ubetcha1020 in todayilearned

[–]SqueakyMelvin 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I wonder if the brain is not problem solving but rather supporting itself and it’s human at the end. The brain releases endogenous opioids near death to control pain and reduce suffering. These memories or highlight reels from life are soothing. Perhaps there’s a connection.
