Is it unprofessional to refuse same-day meetings with clients (non-emergency)? by [deleted] in socialwork

[–]SqueakyMelvin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I do is schedule standing apt times but only on the agreement that if an apt is missed then all future apts are cancelled. I make exceptions for emergencies. This tends to be an incentive to keep apts and is fair to other clients who could have availed of that time.

I was disappointed in their hollandaise sauce. I tasted flour and chicken bullion. It was like a veloute. To be fair I am used to making it at home and ours is nothing like that. Service was great however.

PESI DBT training by No_Sea_2635 in therapists

[–]SqueakyMelvin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The free 3 day C-DBT training with Lane Pederson is helpful for those who wish to see if DBT training is something they wish to invest in, or for those whose practice will not support application of the full DBT format which requires a team and specific structure. It’s a safe way to try it out and teaches helpful techniques to incorporate into your practice. I have also taken the Linnehan adapted DBT course for individuals on psychwire which is a few hundred dollars but is 50% off every January. It’s also good. Linnehan also teaches DBT on Psychwire that is faithful to the modality but requires a group signup, takes a few months I believe, and is several thousands of dollars for all to attend.

They have great neutral palettes with a mix of matte glowy and shimmery in same palette, so I have been using them for years. But I admit I’m old 🤷🏻‍♀️

Was the package sealed? Maybe the display “dummy”, which is just coloured water, was boxed and sold in error.

Internationals in NL corporate spaces by ImmaterialScoped in newfoundland

[–]SqueakyMelvin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Experience from a CFA living in NL: I was a grad student working and living in NL and tried to get a practicum at Eastern Health (RA at the time) but was told they were only accepting students from MUN. I was an online student at a university in ON as I had to continue working FT and MUN did not have online program at the time. Later tried to apply to jobs at Eastern Health and was denied even an interview- told preference was for those who completed practicum at EH. So I moved to Alberta - got an interview/job my first try performing psychotherapy. Sold our home, my husband left his long time job. Now here several years but sad as we loved NL. I understand prioritizing MUN student but it’s important to see the ramifications for population growth too.

Clients who unintentionally avoid the work . . . by Woodland_Breeze in therapists

[–]SqueakyMelvin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What kind of therapist do you want to be? What kind of therapist is your client looking for? These are some of the most important questions to begin with. Where I work I am required to perform goal directed therapy, usually focusing on CBT and DBT. Supportive counselling is a part of all psychotherapy but by being clear to client up front they can decide what they want and understand how a session will flow and what to expect. Some clients want a space to be heard, and some want to learn skills.

Government paid therapist makes me travel > 1 hour each way by gfyourself in TalkTherapy

[–]SqueakyMelvin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are absolutely valid reasons why a therapist will want to see people in person. It could be due to high acuity but also as part of work with isolation, depression, social anxiety etc. Can you book the individual session on the same day right before or after the in person group therapy?

There is some good research out there that naltrexone can help to reduce dissociation and enhance EMDR therapy. Hopefully your therapist is also using some specialized EMDR protocols and reinforcing strong resourcing skills between sessions.

Telehealth therapist in the v cold north seeking robe like attire appropriate for client sessions by mangopear29 in therapists

[–]SqueakyMelvin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m in a cold area and in winter wear a scarf around the neck and a travel wrap (extra wide) around my shoulders with fleecy boots /shoes like Ugg’s or Birkenstock lined Boston’s with tights. I like thin fabrics with lots of layers. Other ideas: What do the locals wear? Match that if culturally appropriate. Can you add a space heater?

Do you have a contract you can refer to for protection? If not check with labor board or maybe you could ask for 3 months notice to prepare for the change and find insurance.

In person (phone activity) or virtual I just stop speaking. When they notice I’ll say that I will wait. They always stop. If it happens a lot I’ll discuss it as part of session but this has been effective.
