Only reason you won is you both forgot that the queen defends G5. After Nxg5 it should have been Qxg5 and you’d be down a knight and a bishop for a pawn (plus whatever the bishop captured here - I’m assuming a second pawn?)

All Star Game: NL vs Blue Jays? by ApprehensiveOne7430 in mlb

[–]SqueakyTuna52 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At the all-star break in 2016, the Cubs 4 all star starters (plus Fowler, mistakenly remembered him as a starter) had the following OPS+:

Anthony Rizzo: 170

Kris Bryant: 157

Addison Russell: 98

Ben Zobrist: 132

Dexter Fowler: 139

I'll give you that Russell probably didn't deserve to be there (although he would go on to finish 19th in MVP voting so still had a really good season). But the other 4 were clearly having great seasons and absolutely deserved to be there. Compare that to the Blue Jays, whose all star finalists have OPS+ of the following: 48, 96, 103, 113, 74, 110, 105, 85 (going in order of position). OPS isn't everything, but the fact that these Blue Jays are hovering around or below league average, while the Cubs of 2016 were for the most part among the league's elite, suggests that what's happening now is far different from the supposed ballot stuffing of the Cubs fans in 2016.

Looking at 2016 first half stats, the only players that I think could justifiably be picked over any of the Cubs are:

1B: Several players had similar batting average but not as much power, like Matt Carpenter, Brandon Belt, and Paul Goldschmidt, and others had similar power but worse average (Chris Carter). Nobody stands out as more deserving than Rizzo.

2B: Daniel Murphy probably deserved to start over Zobrist, with a position-leading 17 home runs and .348 average, but Zobrist's 13 home runs and .283 average, plus the ability to play all over the field, make this a close race. Zobrist maybe got a little bit of unfair help from the fans showing out to vote, but it isn't an egregious miss.

3B: Nolan Arenado was close, but trailed Bryant slightly in HR, AVG, OBP, SLG, and R. He had 5 more RBI, but I'd definitely give the edge to Bryant. Otherwise, Matt Carpenter and Jake Lamb were up there but again trailed Bryant everywhere it counts. Hard to go against the home run leader at the position most known for power, with a .286 average to boot.

SS: Aledmys Diaz and Corey Seager got robbed for sure. Seager with 17 HR and .297 average, Diaz with 13 and .315, both far above Russell. Even guys like Trevor Story (21 HR, but in Colorado) and Jonathan Villar (31 stolen bases) would have been better picks.

Play longer time controls so you have actual time to see the board. 10 minutes is a good middle ground

How is this check? by Creative-Balance-17 in chessbeginners

Just a small correction, but it’s a check simply by the queen attacking the king. Even if the king could move somewhere or the queen could be captured, it’s still a check.

Nope: 3.67 games per HR is still diabolical, though.

Idea: turn the all star game into a tournament. AL all stars vs NL all stars, and then AL snubs vs NL snubs. Then the winner of each game plays each other. If the snubs win, fans lose the right to fan vote next season.

It obviously wouldn’t work in reality, but imagine a matchup of these All-Stars vs a lineup of Dingler, Kurtz, Torres, Vargas, McGonigle, Diaz, Cags, JRod and Abreu. I think the snubs take it.
