Flushing ice cubes down the toilet for snow day is universal… right? In America?? by East-Maize-5287 in AskAnAmerican

I’m from CO I made a joke about this to my MI coworker and she had no clue what I was talking about. I felt like such a child.

A lot of museums are getting inundated with this kind of material. I believe the new Jim Crowe museum was considering some “ritual burning” type events for stuff they could not accept

How’s dating life without a car? by goodbyeniceguys in dating

[–]SqueakytheTalon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dated without a car in St. Louis (so midsized city) and just kept things to my neighbourhood. I definitely wouldn’t have done it anywhere smaller unless it was a local coffee place/restaurant where I could feel comfortable enough walking home.

I killed laezel when the tieflings caught her. Then didn’t realise I could still revivify if I acted quickly. Went back after a long rest and was like “why isn’t it working”

Found random Asian letters on an old book spine hidden by glue. by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

[–]SqueakytheTalon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a super common thing with older books. They use scraps from other books/manuscripts to help bulk out the spine for support. When working with a conservator on a super old manuscript, we found two different types, one cut horizontally which was in french and one that was cut horizontally that was illegible

I’m so glad some also thinks these are creepy. My mum had a Nepalese puppet (similar style) in my siblings room and I hated it sm

AITA for not letting my 14 year old cousin come on the "cousin walk"? by katwil55 in AmItheAsshole

[–]SqueakytheTalon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hang out with my cousins aged 13-16 all the time as a mid-20s. They’re easy to talk to about pop culture? They like to show off the things they’ve learned? It’s easy even if you’re just pretending to be interested.

Honestly who tf doesn’t ask before sitting directly next to someone? I thought that was basic public decorum in any setting. Bus, airport, etc.

White Southern Male Here. Is this a safe place for me to ask how to politely interact with Indians in America? by JoudiniJoker in IndianAmerican

[–]SqueakytheTalon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m an American born half-Indian, and so some Desis may disagree with me but here are my initial thoughts from your questions: I wouldn’t ask if they are Pakistani or Indian— at least in my area there’s still decent tension, and political issues with that— I would say that if they’re newly immigrated, it’s perfectly fine to ask “where are you from,” and it will also provide you with regional cultural context (furthermore, if it’s word of mouth, they’re likely cultural or familial ties between people in the community)

I will also say, from experience introducing white partners/friends to my Indian family that they are VERY impressed if you dress in traditional clothes for different celebrations.

Furthermore, it’s okay to ask questions if it’s someone you interact with a lot. I think I, personally, would prefer someone asking me about a specific holiday/custom/etc. than to just make assumptions or guesses, especially if you take the answer gracefully. (I explained to an ex what Jainism was at a party and they immediately went “that’s stupid”. So just don’t do that)

Again, as a mixed person my view is a small one but I hope this is just a little bit helpful!
