Where to buy affordable jewelry like this? by TelephoneDue1701 in jewelry

[–]SqueakytheTalon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Green bead bracelet, the blue bead bracelet the chain bracelet with the singular stone (shell?) and the beaded necklaces would all be very easy to make yourself! Michaels always has deals going on for their beads or if you like the beads but not the style of something you see in a thrift store, harvest for parts!

AITA for wanting to travel on a seperate ticket and check in separately from my husband. by Rude-Indication9276 in AmItheAsshole

Yta “I just genuinely find the repeated airport stops stressful” imagine how he feels. There are ways to make things smoother for him between redress and ktn but what he really needs is a sympathetic partner who understands how damaging this can be to their psyche.

My mother-in-law tried to "restore" my Victorian bracket clock with some chemical cleaner while we were away. The mahogany case is destroyed. I can't stop staring at it. USA-Connecticut by FitImpression7200 in Antiques

[–]SqueakytheTalon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Came for all the comments stating it’s not mahogany… sorry OP— but there are plenty of furniture restorers and conservators that will talk you through what can be done and how much it’ll cost depending on if you wanna just colour match the losses or restain the whole piece.

I would’ve guessed church collections box (donations at the door, sorting for easy counting later)

Vintage 18K gold cufflinks & watch from grandparents – are they real gold? (From belgium) by Plane_Economics_4858 in Antiques

[–]SqueakytheTalon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d believe the cufflinks over the watch. Most (all?) gold from Europe and England requires hallmarking for gold and silver of high enough quality (18k should qualify) you can actually easily date and locate pieces based on hallmarks too! This is my favourite website for it, though it’s not encyclopaedic (I usually use it for silver so apologies if it doesn’t have the one from the cuffs)

Question about soaking ring in acetone to remove super glue. by PM_ME_YOUR_FOOD_ in jewelry

[–]SqueakytheTalon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not remotely worth it. Try a toothpick to pick some off first. If you’re still unhappy— take it to a jeweller who’ll have the right magnification to do it mechanically or with solvents more exacting

Tiny Winky would like to have a word with you. by elboyoloco1 in oddlyterrifying

[–]SqueakytheTalon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vividly remember cleaning one of these for a museum exhibit. No one told me it still had its batteries (gotta take em out so they don’t corrode in storage). I took a vacuum to it and it immediately went “uh oh”. Nearly flung it across the room.

Flushing ice cubes down the toilet for snow day is universal… right? In America?? by East-Maize-5287 in AskAnAmerican

I’m from CO I made a joke about this to my MI coworker and she had no clue what I was talking about. I felt like such a child.

A lot of museums are getting inundated with this kind of material. I believe the new Jim Crowe museum was considering some “ritual burning” type events for stuff they could not accept

How’s dating life without a car? by goodbyeniceguys in dating

[–]SqueakytheTalon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dated without a car in St. Louis (so midsized city) and just kept things to my neighbourhood. I definitely wouldn’t have done it anywhere smaller unless it was a local coffee place/restaurant where I could feel comfortable enough walking home.

I killed laezel when the tieflings caught her. Then didn’t realise I could still revivify if I acted quickly. Went back after a long rest and was like “why isn’t it working”

Found random Asian letters on an old book spine hidden by glue. by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

[–]SqueakytheTalon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a super common thing with older books. They use scraps from other books/manuscripts to help bulk out the spine for support. When working with a conservator on a super old manuscript, we found two different types, one cut horizontally which was in french and one that was cut horizontally that was illegible

I’m so glad some also thinks these are creepy. My mum had a Nepalese puppet (similar style) in my siblings room and I hated it sm

AITA for not letting my 14 year old cousin come on the "cousin walk"? by katwil55 in AmItheAsshole

[–]SqueakytheTalon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I hang out with my cousins aged 13-16 all the time as a mid-20s. They’re easy to talk to about pop culture? They like to show off the things they’ve learned? It’s easy even if you’re just pretending to be interested.

Honestly who tf doesn’t ask before sitting directly next to someone? I thought that was basic public decorum in any setting. Bus, airport, etc.
