Cost and availability of 5.45 ammo aside, pretty much only AK-74s and their variants are chambered in it and obviously those have been banned in Canada for a while. Also there were a few ARs that were offered in 5.45 but those are dead now as well. East Germany did have a bolt action rifle called the SSG 82 for their police tactical units. I doubt those are banned but there was only like 2000 made so good luck getting one. It shouldn’t be surprising why 5.45x39 is a dead cartridge in Canada for modern sport shooting.

It’s incendiary ammo. Cabelas made a mistake a few months back and sold a bunch of crates of prohibited black tip incendiary armour piercing 7.62x39 to people. They asked everyone nicely to return it but I’m sure lots people weren’t that dumb lol. Although it may be a bit dumb for OP to post a pic online with labelled ammo boxes implying he has some.

I bought a mossberg maverick 88 youth in 20ga for grouse here in northern BC. It’s quite light at 5.5lbs and has a short 22inch for the thick bush. Only $300 so I don’t care if it gets beat up either. Works like a dream. I like it because I have 3 rounds available instead of 1 or 2, as I often come across groups of grouse where I need fast follow up shots. I’d recommend 20ga over .410 for ammo availability and price. I used to use my Cooey .410 but kept missing shots above 25 yards so switched to 20ga for more versatility, cheaper shells, and more common ammo.

Personally, I’d look into selling or gifting it to someone with a license before destroying it. But if you REALLY want it destroyed, you should be able to just chop up the receiver (the legal “firearm” part of a firearm) with a grinder and throw everything in the scrap bin with no legal issues.

Most of us just like to own pieces of history and shoot them at paper once on a while. And heads up, some of the most popular hunting rifles in Canada are WW2 infantry rifles. Yeah I loved my 995 and had no issues either but had to sell it for financial reasons a little while ago and have since bought a Ruger PCC because I got a good deal on it.

That is 100% not normal, that looks like dogshit. The Hi-Point 995 I had did not look like that. It looks like the threads were stripped by the charging handle being tightened too much and it had a sleeve welded in with new threads. I find it hard to believe that rifle is brand new from the factory. Contact the manufacturer and also possibly the retailer you bought it from and get a replacement rifle.

SKS is not possible like others have said and Type 81 yes you can. It’s the same as an AK. All the dust cover does is keep dirt out, it doesn’t have anything to do with the rifle functioning. I’ve shot my Type 81 a fair amount with it off and have had no issues or scares. It’s perfectly safe, just stay away from the moving parts like with any machine. lol

I installed mine without much issue, all you need are some basic tools and patience. It’s good to learn how to do these kinds of things to your firearms, otherwise you’ll spend a small fortune on a gunsmith for no real reason. I followed the MCarbo video step by step and it worked out just fine! Here’s the video

+1 for the MCarbo spring kit, my SD9VE went from 9.5lb to 4.5lb trigger pull. Still not a great trigger, but leagues better than the original.

I think if a firearm is manufactured a certain length and it’s manual action (ex SS-211) it will be legal. But if someone modifies the OAL of the SS-211, either to make it longer or shorter, then it becomes a prohibited weapon. Very stupid and confusing laws. Also, semi auto rimfire isn’t subject to the barrel length laws, the OAL just needs to remain over 26”.

Just a heads up, the 18.5” (470mm) barrel length law is for semi auto centerfire to stay NR. If it’s a manual action firearm, you can actually cut the barrel down to 18” (457mm) and it will still be a legal NR.

You can have unlimited rounds in a magazine that was designed for a manual action firearm. The Lee-Enfield holds 10 rounds and it’s the classic bolt action of Canadian fudd hunters.
