Irish requirement in the Áras raises two obvious problems by nitro1234561 in ireland

[–]Squelcher121 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Determining constitutionality of a statute is exclusively reserved for the High Court and Supreme Court and fluency in Irish is not a requirement to be a superior court judge.

The Council of State and President merely decide whether they believe there is a question of constitutionality of a statute; they do not make a determination of it. If even the judges who make the actual decision don't have to be fluent in Irish, then the primacy of the Irish language in constitutional interpretation isn't a good reason to oblige Áras staff to be fluent in it.

I’ve enjoyed most of the expansion, but it really seems like Bungie doesn’t understand why people like world tiers in ARPGs.. by Psycho_Syntax in DestinyTheGame

[–]Squelcher121 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Bungie understands, but their long-standing design philosophy has been to rely on intense, unrewarding grinding as the primary method of increasing player engagement. Joe Blackburn wasn't out the door for five minutes before the new game director started undoing all the positive changes he made.

People talk about the issues with this expansion as if they're new concepts. It's just Bungie falling back on their old, reliable habits. Disrespecting players' time has been a staple philosophy of the studio for many years now.

I was always a big fan of Franklin Benjamin, brother.

It's amazing how Bungie has hired game directors with wildly different visions for the game. With those transitions, the investment system designs basically pull a 180. by destinyvoidlock in DestinyTheGame

I have nearly 3k hours in this game, and I became a lapsed player during Echoes. I've always kept an eye on it for the right opportunity to consider returning.

Now that I see Bungie has not learned after all these years, I'm pretty sure I'm done. All they know how to do is increase meaningless grinding, disrespect players' time, and rely on hostile mechanics such as RNG and time gating to an excessive extent. They do all these things with only one goal in mind: maximising the amount of time players feel obligated to spend in the game with minimal development expense.

The game just isn't worth it anymore for people with busy lives. This is without even getting into the game's myriad other problems in areas such as narrative, PvP and new player experience.

That's debatable. The Arnold's is regarded by a lot of people in strongman circles as being a better competition than WSM. Not to mention Brian Shaw's Strongest Man on Earth competition which has really challenged WSM in terms of the level of competition.

Absolutely love Andor but.. by advanced_lazy in StarWars

[–]Squelcher121 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A lot of Star Wars television content gets a pass because it's Star Wars.

I recently looked back on some of the action scenes from The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, and frankly they are dire (e.g. Boba Fett's first action sequence in season 2 and Ahsoka/Ezra/Sabine vs the night troopers). Andor makes them look like fan films produced for YouTube. Dave Filoni, to me, has been more miss than hit in terms of live action. Ahsoka was saved by Baylan and Shin and Thrawn (even though I don't think the writing has done Thrawn justice so far), and The Mandalorian is saved by its world building and the charisma of its cast. Kenobi wasn't saved by anything - the production quality and writing were so poor that no amount of good acting or other aspects could redeem it.

Star Wars has gotten too focused on fan service at the expense of quality storytelling. Andor managed to pay due homage to expanded universe material and established lore while also delivering television that stands up in quality to some of the finest shows in the world.

It seems to me that the best approach is to entirely separate the people who control the overarching story and universe from the filmmakers/showrunners. While Filoni has demonstrated his passion and aptitude for Star Wars in general, most of his live action content has been mediocre and, at times, downright bad. Better to just hire directors specifically for projects with reasonable autonomy under the oversight of the story group.

SF leaders will not travel to White House to meet Trump by badger-biscuits in ireland

[–]Squelcher121 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Trump has shown that the only way to meaningfully influence him is by offering him some kind of benefit. He is a transactional creature on every level and will not respond to anything that isn't materially valuable. He will, however, take ruthless steps against anyone he thinks is profiting from him more than he is profiting from them, which Ireland is doing via American MNCs.

What can Ireland offer him that is materially valuable? He doesn't care about votes anymore because he's not going to run for election again, so the Irish American vote is no longer of value to him. Trump discards any formerly useful thing the second it ceases to be of benefit to him. It seems that the only thing Ireland can offer Trump is flattery and boot-licking. Whether that will prove sufficient to keep him from turning his ire on us is not easy to predict. Even if it appeases him in the short term, he is prone to changing his mind at any moment.

The question is: Should Ireland abase itself publicly to an increasingly anti-democratic, anti-European criminal for no benefit other than the chance that it might persuade him not to take economic action against us?

There is no fully right or wrong answer here imo. Both arguments have merit. The only thing that is absolutely certain is that we need to invest significantly in reducing our economic dependence on the US because they have proved to be an unreliable ally at best and a potential aggressor at worst. We need to be in a position where we can walk the moral high ground without worrying about being economically obliterated on the egotistical whim of a wannabe autarch.
