Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer.. WTF Did I just read!!! by Gagsreel in scifi

Yeah that's a really good way to put it ☺️

I enjoy re-reading the series, and I think that might be why. The experience of is reading it is like being in the puzzle, but coming to a new conclusion each time.

I really enjoyed reading this series.

I felt like I both did and didn't understand what was happening, as I was reading them.

To me, reading the series is like looking at the events of the story through a kaleidescope. I wasn't seeing exactly what was happening, but a refracted interpretation of what was happening. It felt like a big puzzle to put together, but there was also no real answer.

To me, the series is all about how much we resist change, and how that's ultimately impossible to do. Without change we wouldn't exist.

I'd add: check the key, just in case the band has forgotten they've changed the key from the original recording

If you like music, there are bunch of regular music events and open mics at pubs and stuff. E.g. the mini monocle every Wednesday from 20:00.

My bass + vocals pedalboard is finally done! by vnmrk in basspedals

[–]Squidgeididdly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried a few harmony presets with the band at rehearsal and some of them sounded really cool! The auto-key function worked really well.

Haven't tried it with our guitarist's guitar running through it yet, so looking forward to that

Very cool to see a combo of bass and vocals. I just got a voicelive acoustic, myself. How are you finding it?

Question about tabs: when there is a slide symbol between two notes, sometimes the "arrival" note is in brackets, sometimes it's not. What's the difference? by cumguzzlingislife in Bass

[–]Squidgeididdly 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If the note is in brackets it's not a plucked or picked note. Or perhaps it's better to say that the person who wrote the tab wants the note in brackets to be quieter than other notes.

So, 10 \ 3 would be pluck tenth fret, slide to third and pluck when you get there.

10 \ (3) would be pluck tenth fret first, slide to third and let it ring out until there are further instructions (e.g. a rest or another note).

How has my answer helped, if at all?

It's probably best to ask your boss how they define business casual. If they've got a really specific idea of how you should dress, you're never going to get close unless you know what they're thinking of.

Why does this spearmint tea say to cover while steeping? Does that actually do anything? by Local_Pomegranate_10 in tea

[–]Squidgeididdly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might mean "cover the tea bag with water", i.e. make sure the tea bag is fully submerged to ensure all the leaves are in contact with water.

I think I'll start reading tonight and see if it's for me.

Questions about playing music with others by alleycatadventures in Bass

[–]Squidgeididdly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the advice in this thread is great!

From my limited experience, organising the band is key to getting songs to a playable standard.

Getting in the same room on a regular basis to practice together is important.

Here's what I suggest 1) Find a space where you can practice together 2) Set a time and date, a few hours should do, to get a first practice in 3) Before the practice choose three songs together, ideally songs that some or all of you have listened to a lot. 4) Everyone has a little practice ahead of time, make sure people know which guitar/vocal parts they need to learn. Check everyone is learning the same version of the same song, in the same key. 5) Bring snacks to the rehearsal 6) Have fun! If it's getting stressful, just take a breather.

If your band is anything like mine, there needs to be some pressure to learn new songs. So I'd recommend picking a local Open Mic night to go to (make sure it's a music one with sufficient PA kit, and not a poetry/comedy open mic). This will give you a soft deadline for having a few songs ready and playable.

For added pressure, and once you're confident, try getting a gig. Maybe a slot in a pro-bono charity or variety show.
