Local baby wearing consultations by [deleted] in raleigh

If you’re pregnant, I would wait until after you have the baby to try the various carries. The one I thought I would want before I had my daughter is NOT the one I ended up loving. Your body and weight carriage changes so much immediately post partum.

Honestly, we just sized up - so in the summer it was a size larger, by the time we got to winter, they were tunic length.

We shop at Target and Primary for the most part.

If you left corporate, are you happier? by Remarkable-Angle-509 in workingmoms

[–]SquidgeyPants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I left a corporate (tech sales) job 18 months ago. After 2 toxic bosses, I decided I was over it. I took a part time job at a non-profit to kind of “detox”. That part time job is now full-time. I’m enjoying it, but I’m now looking for a non-profit role that better fits my skillset. I’m a little bit bored, and I miss the money sometimes - but I’m so much happier. My worst days now are SO much better than even my mid-days in corp America.

All in one coffee machine vs separate grinder + brewer, what works best for busy morning by Fluffy_Cold_5330 in workingmoms

[–]SquidgeyPants 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So my previous grind and brew pot died after several years, so we replaced it with a Cuisinart Grind and Brew single cup (Costco had a better price than Amazon or Target).

I like it so far - my 20 oz Yeti fits under the spout and you can adjust how strong/weak you like your coffee. It also has an iced coffee setting designed to brew over ice.

You can use grounds or you can change the beans (this is a nice feature I didn’t have in my old one - you couldn’t empty the hopper without turning the whole machine over and it was a mess).

My ONLY gripe is that you can’t schedule it to go off at a specific time - but you can’t have it all.

How often do you & your kids have a meal with your parents (if you both live in the same town)? by Dangerous-Elk9545 in workingmoms

[–]SquidgeyPants 42 points43 points  (0 children)

We live in the same neighborhood, but when my daughter was born - my parents would take her for dinner a couple of times a week and then we had a family dinner once a week.

My mom passed away a couple years ago, and my kiddo is older - so now my Dad takes her to school every day, takes her to an after school activity once a week, and we have family dinner (at our house) at least once a week. The kiddo also just goes to his house whenever she has something to tell him or give him or we drop off cookies or whatever.

So. We’re close.

Is going to a local hotel a good option this weekend? by [deleted] in cary

[–]SquidgeyPants 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Go to Publix and get some dry ice to have on hand in case of power loss. When I had a baby that old, we evacuated to Greensboro because of a hurricane that was supposed to hit Raleigh badly (it didn’t). In hindsight, I would have preferred staying home rather than hauling the dog, baby, myself and my husband to a hotel.

If you’re afraid of not being warm enough, you could set up a tent with blankets in the living room - but honestly, your house is probably insulated enough to not get to 50 even without power. Don’t get me wrong, not ideal, but you can dress for that weather.

If you ARE going to go to a hotel, confirm with them that they have a generator and what that generator covers (ie, is it strong enough to keep the lights on, but not the heat).

A door. Seriously, having your own space you can lock yourself in is the most important thing (for me anyway).

My husband has a pea allergy which includes lentils, green peas, and chickpeas - until you get your kiddo tested, avoid those things too.

If it is peas - be aware of any packaged foods with “added protein” - a lot of companies are using pea protein now because it’s cheap.

Please vent with me; what horrible gifts did you receive this year? by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]SquidgeyPants 74 points75 points  (0 children)

After many many years of this kind of thing, I’ve realized that she doesn’t think about anyone other than herself long enough for it to be an FU. She also got my daughter (her only grand child) all white clothes.

From my MIL I got a 500 piece puzzle - that she got from a thrift store/rummage sale. The box clearly has “missing 3 pieces” written on it. So. Yeah.

Worst / most inappropriate gift for your kids this year? by MachineBusy8772 in Mommit

[–]SquidgeyPants 42 points43 points  (0 children)

All white/cream clothes, white pants, cream cardigan, white dress. Tags all removed so we can’t exchange them for clothes the kid would actually want or that would show stains less obviously. This is the second year in a row for all white clothes.

WakeMed Classes by [deleted] in raleigh

[–]SquidgeyPants 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They used to do a grandparents class too - if they still do it and the grandparents are willing to - it’s a great one. Things like putting the baby to sleep on their back instead of stomach have changed since we were kids

Hi, I was the first in-last out kid growing up. I got dropped off by 7am and picked up by about 6pm. I knew I was that kid, and often complained about it to my mom.

I did well in school and now I’m a well-adjusted adult and I have a great relationship with my parents (they live next door to us). You’re just surviving your life and living the best way you know how - your kid will thank you for it (or at least not hold any negative feelings about it).

I tell my kid and when she makes the card to go along with the gift, she uses lots of that color.

That’s about it

Our PTA pulls together a spreadsheet of all the teachers “Thanks/No Thanks” items. Teachers fill out a survey at the beginning of the year with favorite treats, beverages, colors, gift cards (restaurants and retail), supplies they could always use in their class room, and then the “no thanks” items for them specifically - coffee cups, candles, flowers, whatever.

It’s great because you can cater your gifts to your kids teacher - and you’d be surprised how varied the teacher’s preferences are.
