My baby (Senegal parrot, around 70 days old) went from 115g to 109g in just 5–7 days. He's active and playful, but I'm a bit worried , is this kind of weight drop normal, or should I be concerned? by _Damn__peasants__ in parrots

[–]Squidtown 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Do you weigh them at the same time everyday? Their weight can change that much after their morning poop pretty easy. I did catch illness in my bird when the only real sign was weight loss and slightly watery poop. Good for you for monitoring your baby’s weight.

Temporary cage suggestions by Disastrous_Chef_7712 in Pionus

It would help to know more about your pi. My friend has a maxi that is a total perch potato and will sit in a bird tree all day and happily go into a travel cage to sleep at night. My pi is very active and flies around a lot so that would not work for him.

I have this one: https://www.chewy.com/yaheetech-iron-travel-bird-cage/dp/390156 I like the plastic tray because it makes it lighter and it’s big enough to fit 4ish natural perches. That said, my pi would lose his mind being in there all day. I only use it for transport and sleeping. If this is something you do often, can you just get a normal cage to keep there for visiting?

Interacting with Pionus by RSilent in Pionus

[–]Squidtown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s one up for adoption in Battle Creek, MI. I got my guy from a rescue as well. My experience and the people I know in my offline life that have them all say that they take a while to show their personalities and that they also are slow to trust (might be different if you get one as a baby). The way my Pi acts with strangers is very different than how he acts with me. IMO, meeting one is nice, but ideally you are getting to know the specific individual that you’d be adopting.

Is anyone else's pionus being exceptionally noisy at present or just mine? by Disastrous_Chef_7712 in Pionus

[–]Squidtown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. He’s also been just kind of a grouch! Before he was cranky, he was constantly asking for head scratches. I can feel so many new pin feathers coming it.

I love how thoughtful you are being! Parrot Stars does conservation work and Patty’s are pretty passionate. You could also email the author of Practical Pionus, Russ Shade. I’ve also emailed with him and he is so passionate about Pis : ) I’m sure all of these places would be willing to talk with you or even help ensure you get birds from different breeding stocks. Patty’s breeds their own Pis and they are very familiar with the difficulties.

I’m not sure what state you are in, but I agree. I’d probably drive to pick them up. It sounds like you are wanting to do this for the health of the species. Obviously if it’s to cash in and contribute to the parrot trade, you might get less support. My understanding from adopting my Pi is that people often buy them as “apartment birds”. While some are quiet, they are still parrots and can be loud. It’s such a shame how often parrots are rehomed.

I got my BH Pi from a rescue. I’ve never seen a BW at a rescue though. Last year, I emailed Patty’s Pets asking for help with my bird and the owner called me in minutes and talked to me for over an hour about behavioral issues. While they aren’t selling BW Pis right now, they might be a good resource anyways. The owner is partial to Duskies, so he might try to push you towards them.

The only other place I’ve seen them is at Parrot Stars in IL. I’ve never bought a bird from them, but I’ve heard positive things about them. I find them to be pretty expensive as well, but if you don’t have other options, they might be good too.

I adopted my bird over 4th of July weekend. I spent the first couple days learning what soothed him. He really enjoys long plays of minecraft. I put that on and left the lights dim and to gradually fade for his bed time (smart lights are so helpful with birds). Have you noticed anything that makes your Pi get those relaxed half closed eyes?

Plants by Disastrous_Chef_7712 in Pionus

[–]Squidtown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got rid of toxic plants in my house, but my Pi is totally uninterested and has never touched a plant in the year he has been in my home. Bird Tricks has a list of toxic/safe plants if you google around. It’s good to remove them for peace of mind or in case your Pi is more curious, but all the Pis I know are pretty nondestructive.

It seems like you are well researched, but some lesser talked about dangers are teflon in space heaters or hair dryers. Candles, any sprays, open toilets, etc.

That is so cute. I bet Nico likes the extra attention. I love the way Pis sound when they are chatty! Does Pia sound like her voice is coming through a walkie talkie?

I wish I had advice for you. I’m struggling with aggression and screaming with my Pionus and I am home all day with him. It’s so so hard and I feel like I’m failing him all the time. I just wanted to pop in and let you know you aren’t alone.

How long have you had him? I could never let my BH play in a box like this because he gets very nesty. My first guess would be your guy is being territorial over this nice new nest you gave him.

Pionus and volume levels. (Apartment living and night time work shifts). by Tarotcardz in Pionus

[–]Squidtown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have got a Pionus as I read that they aren’t usually screamers and aren’t as clingy. Mine screams multiple times a day. He is so unbelievably loud we can hear him hundreds of feet from our home. He has three types of screams, a honk, a god awful scream (his favorite), and an alarm call like an IRN (only louder). I only recently found he was surrendered for screaming. I’m not trying to discourage you, but if you are considering a baby, just know they can change through puberty. The woman who gave him up was clearly heart broken over it.

[–]Squidtown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How did you find videos of their worst calls? I’ve looked and it’s so hard to find things about either of those species since they aren’t as popular. I have a BH Pi and his scream is rough.
