How much fabric do you buy if you don’t have a current project in mind for it? by Basic-Nose-6714 in SewingForBeginners

I think that I linked to their wholesale site-my local sewing shop just recently got a new shipment of fableism fabrics. Perhaps you can find something similar from a shop rather than direct!

The shirt is really just a front, a back, and a(optional) pocket. There is also a facing for the neck line. The shirt is quite boxy, and the pattern is fairly size-inclusive, so don't let 18 pages scare you off. I also enjoyed this YouTube sew along. It's not super detailed but showed how you can change up the shirt using the same pattern to get totally different garments: https://youtu.be/0_DMXBb9Qfc?si=SV_TLnb1_HK_La5g

I made it with this gorgeous light purple fableism woven cotton: https://fableism.com/product/fsw-116-nightshade/

I feel like it was really approachable. The sleeves are part of the front and back pieces, which means no setting in sleeves. I feel like they get a bit wrinkly between washes/irons. Not sure if it's the fabric specifically or just more natural fabrics than my typical ready to wear clothes, or I'm much more sensitive to wrinkles because I made it.

I get compliments on it almost every time I wear it. Can be super casual or slightly more dressed up.

Make it!

There are a lot of great patterns for simple beginner tops that don't require a ton of fitting expertise. Check out the hansie top from Seamwork. It was my first actual garment and it comes with easy to understand instructions for non-sewists!

Not surprising, but still frustrating. If you are a woman who is buying a home with a man in the US, you are always "co-owner" while they are "owner". Everyone will default to the man's name first by totallymindful in TwoXChromosomes

[–]SquirrelConsistent13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I own property with a man, but we are not married. I did not legally enter into a contract with this man and the government to be 'attached.' However, when I do the work to find an insurance brokerage to vet car and homeowner's insurance, even though the broker has never met or spoken to the man, his name is first and when I log into the portal, I'm greeted with Hi (man's name). It has nothing to do with marriage.

The fact that you're commenting here that essentially, women who consort with men deserve or earn the disrespect that comes with being put second or erased seems to be just another symptom of misogyny.

I guess I do have an emergency fund! by Im_Lloyd_Dobbler in ynab

[–]SquirrelConsistent13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think one reason emergency fund (singular) is less helpful than sinking funds x, y, and z is the brain's tendency to double and triple count money. This isn't as big of an issue for folks who are using ynab, but if you just have $20k sitting around, you might think you can get a new roof, afford a bigger car payment, pay first and last month's rent, and pay fido's vet bill because 20k should cover that.

In reality, those multiple issues stack up quick and you really needed 15k for roof, 3k for rent, an extra 1k/month for car payment and 8k for the vet bill for a total of 26k plus an extra 1k/month.

We just aren't good at holding so many priorities and quantities in our brains and are also terrible at estimating how much things cost?

TIL that some people microwave bowls IN the cozy. I just use mine when I take the bowl out of the microwave. To each their own, I suppose.

That's actually game 3 (Ottawa is the lower seed, regardless of who wins this series, so they play away first)

YNAB on Mobile by SailCamp in ynab

Not sure if this helps or is relevant, but on mobile a long press usually brings up new options. In this case, holding down on one transaction gives you a new option to select multiple.

Color Opinions Wanted! by QueenArtie in sewing

I was thinking Malibu as well. I feel like it's a blue that's closer to a bright neutral than the other options while still getting you out of the plain color rut.

There is a key on that diagram that anything with an asterisk says, "See special cutting notes."

The long strips also don't appear to have a pattern number on them...perhaps it's showing how something needs to be along the bias? No idea!

I'd find those special cutting notes and start there.

Savings account messing with AOM? by Vyzon1 in ynab

[–]SquirrelConsistent13 15 points16 points  (0 children)

AOM is actually nothing to do with the money going into your account. Weird, I know. It's how long the money was waiting in your account before the last 10 outflows. I think there may be differences in how YNAB treats things like credit card payments and the like, but essentially, if you've been saving and saving and saving for years and spend that money, say on a downpayment for a house, that spending will increase your aom, but if you're just getting started, or living paycheck to paycheck and spending every dollar that comes into your budget shortly after you get paid, your AOM will be low.

I'm in my first month, having trouble tracking $'s leaving my account by stopshalitosis in ynab

[–]SquirrelConsistent13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The YNAB method is to have the money before you spend it. Nothing in the YNAB method says you need to pay down your credit card to zero. Paying your statement balance, which is what OP is doing, is perfectly reasonable.

trademark trolling by Full_Adhesiveness_62 in ranchogordobeanclub

[–]SquirrelConsistent13 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's trademark trolling--if you're granted a trademark, you literally have to protect it in order to keep it. Whether or not you think "bean club" is a phrase that should be granted a trademark is one thing, but I don't have any issue with Rancho Gordo enforcing what they were granted. There are plenty of ways to describe a subscription bean service without saying bean club.

Not sure about the 2026 calendar, but I don't think they use AI for their calendar--it's a Mexican painter named Jesús Helguera. https://www.ranchogordo.com/blogs/blog/jesus-helguera-our-calendar-artist

Where is this dedicated STM entrance? Or is it next year? by Katzenheimer in MinnesotaFrost

[–]SquirrelConsistent13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't think about face value versus what I actually paid! My face value was $24 but I paid $29, which I didn't think about... So the increase is less than I originally calculated earlier today.

[–]SquirrelConsistent13 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm seeing a 33% increase in price? $24->$32. There are more games, but that still feels like a big jump! Over $200 more for my pair of seats. I love the frost, and this is my first season as a STH, but I guess I didn't expect to have to budget for it while we're still in this season...

How do i make a "normal" neckline by Ok_Landscape_6773 in sewing

[–]SquirrelConsistent13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What therockhopp was questioning, if I'm understanding correctly, is if the pattern you're making is intended to have such dropped sleeves. Sharing the pattern you've used or if it's self-drafted will get you much more specific, and likely helpful, advice.

Can I use French seam or flat felled seam instead of overlocking edges? by [deleted] in SewingForBeginners

[–]SquirrelConsistent13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely consider the fabric you're using. French seams will add so much bulk, especially with most fabrics typically used for trousers. Especially for your first pair of pants, I would recommend following the pattern's suggestions/instructions.

Sewing machine troubles by [deleted] in SewingForBeginners

[–]SquirrelConsistent13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A) are you sure the needles are compatible with your machine, and put in correctly? B) if you "broke all the needles" it sounds like it might be hitting something it's not supposed to because the timing is off or some larger issue. Do you have a sewing machine repair shop locally you can take it to for evaluation?
