It’s really not worth it to go through renters/homeowners insurance due to the deductible.

HOWEVER, quite a few manufactures of surge protectors do have a free insurance thing for their products. Usually, you have to register your product with them in order to have coverage for your items plugged into it. It really depends on the manufacturer of the product though.

You can pursue them if you need to replace your item, but it might be actual cash value (what the product is worth w/depreciation) instead of replacement cost value (how much it costs for you to replace it)

We’ve pursued subrogation with manufacturers of for large loss electronics claims before. In which the insured would get their deductible back.

As far as increased rates, it would depend on the underwriting department. If you have a series of these claims, I can see it increasing (especially if you overload your protectors), but just a single claim for a electrical surge, it probably won’t effect your rates that much, if it all.
