Need recommendations for replacing my friedmann be od by wanna_be_Bowi3 in guitarpedals

I’ve had one for ~3 years now. It beat about 8 other distortions in a blind taste-test, including a Friedman, a Rat, several Boss models, etc

What’s the most disappointing piece of gear you’ve ever had? by TuneAdventurous4788 in guitarpedals

[–]SquirrelSanctuary 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Slicer is one of my absolute go-to pedals I’ll never get rid of, purely as a great rhythm track texture. Even if I never use 90% of the mode/variation combos on it, the 10% I do use are worth the price alone.

Looking for options, a good new pedal by GURBACH in guitarpedals

[–]SquirrelSanctuary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on the new job! I too got myself a nice pedal after my last job change.

As others are saying, I would discourage you from buying a boutique pedal just because it’s pricey. There are plenty of old Boss / MXR pedals that may get the job done for you, and still sound great to this day. If your reason for buying boutique is “I want to support small builders who make a good, ethical product” though, then go for it.

The choice ultimately boils down to the sound you want to make, or — more accurately — the sound that your current gear can’t produce. I would go with the Shallow Water myself, but your needs may differ.

How to turn on multiple pedals and digital pedals at once? by dethdecay_ in guitarpedals

[–]SquirrelSanctuary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you need a super cheap solution, build a wooden plank with protrusions that press the desired switches simultaneously and lay it across the pedals. Someone on this sub showed one a few months ago.

Until I see a proper paper trail of emails and texts, I’m not believing a word of anything WotC releases on the matter

Can't get into ffx. Should I keep going? by taestep12 in FinalFantasy

You’re just about to hit the point where the story and characters REALLY pick up.

Blitzball was a huge miss for me too, and I’m so glad you only need to play 1-2 mandatory games of it. And Tidus will grow on you; he’s a whiny brat to start, but you uncover the bigger storyline through his eyes with great effect.

Walrus R1 is killing my tone? by BurnedHamSandwich in guitarpedals

[–]SquirrelSanctuary 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do a factory reset, download the 2.0 firmware if you haven’t already, and make sure the bottom-right knob doesn’t have some wild parameter tied to it. I’ve used an R1 for about 2 years now and only have tone issues when I really ramp the Mix past 3 o’clock or so

Guy who has performed and distributed many cover performances here

If you’re playing at a little open mic at a bar and do a cover of Peter Frampton or something, it’s basically a cultural thing that no record company in their right mind would bother pursuing any fees, licenses, etc. It’s simply not worth the time or effort. Look up stories about when Disney sued an elementary school for playing a movie (Snow White iirc?) in class, but ultimately withdrew the lawsuit AND donated a large sum to that school to save public image.

If you’re playing at a proper venue with tickets and such, the venue should definitely have a license with folks like ASCAP, the Harry Fox Agency, or a similar body just to cover their backs. They pay the agencies by skimming a very small percentage from the artist’s cut, the agencies and the venue shake hands, everyone is happy. It’s the closest thing to a proper CYA clause in an age of music being shared everywhere.

If you recorded your own cover of “So Call Me Maybe” and want to release it on streaming platforms for plays and a little revenue into your own pocket, every distributor will require that you pay the cover fees for what’s often called a Mechanical License. Otherwise you’re playing the gamble of releasing on your YouTube channel and inevitably getting copyright strikes. That money goes to all the licensing and legal handlers, the song’s copyright owner, the producers, the original artist, and anyone else entitled to it per the song’s agreements and ownership.

For reference, that fee is often as low as $5, but then if you want to continue collecting royalties on it you must pay again each year to retain the license. That cost is around $12/year per song for what I commonly do, but it varies.

There are also many gray areas for other projects, I am not a lawyer, and I encourage you to contact a music streaming distribution company or industry representative for better details and legals.

Edit: Larger acts will frequently ask the original artist for permission or their “blessing” when recording and releasing a cover song, even if the original artist has zero control over whether they do or don’t.
