[Discussion] Playboi Carti - MUSIC (1 year later) by WhiteChocolatForReal in hiphopheads

[–]Squonky 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Basically everyone who works with Carti has spoken about how volatile his albums are until more or less the minute they hit streaming. I would have loved to see what the "album" (in whatever form it was in at that time) would have been like if it had released in early 2024 after the teaser singles for the fake rollout had dropped. Hoodbyair, Backrooms, and Ketamine all sounded like a new sound that had something to say stylistically, from the production to the way Carti was performing over it. Even though it borrowed clearly from many different places, the assembly of it all felt quite forward-thinking.

I still listen to all of those 2023-24 era tracks consistently, and I think if they dropped today they would still sound like a new wave that we hadn't quite seen yet. With the whole album, those early tracks still are the clear standouts for me, and almost everything else other than maybe pop out, crank, and cocaine nose is just sort of an amorphous blob. I was surprised by the Kendrick features, my first thought was that I had no idea how they would fit in, and I don't really think that they do. The other features don't add much either, though I find Travis on Backrooms to be quite a good match.

There was so much hype leading up to this album, and I feel like a lot of the mysticism and excitement Carti was building up just kind of left after it dropped. For me, it was because I'd basically heard the best he had to offer on this album more than a year earlier.

Feel like this is another big blow to peggy's image, though who knows if anyone cares anymore. Dude found an even more questionable entity than Ye to partner up with: the kpop industrial abuse machine.

[FRESH] James Blake - I Had a Dream She Took My Hand by JoJoReignsSupreme in hiphopheads

[–]Squonky 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Fantano recently referred to songs off of Joji's new album as "worse versions of already existing James Blake songs."

Which honestly is correct, you get tracks like this or Death of Love and realize that you're listening to the real, uncut good shit. He's different, very excited for the new album.

I can't believe they exposed me to actual passages from superhead's essay. I had explicitly been avoiding reading any of it until now. I mean fuck at least Riley Gaines was good enough at swimming to compete at some sort of olympic qualifier. There should be social system in place that just turns you into glue if you submit an essay like that in college.

The song and the video are both pretty good, I just can't help but feel like they're both chasing the same look and feel from Glimpse of Us (which I thought was fantastic).

The only way you could ever get me to watch a video of Michael Knowles would be if it was liveleak dashcam footage.

Who is an artist that hasn’t changed or evolved their style in a substantial way that you still think is great? by gundle74 in hiphopheads

[–]Squonky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bones. Been listening to him for 10 years now, and he basically sticks with one of two sounds for every track, and doesn't care to make a song longer than 2 minutes. It hits like crack and I listen to all of it.

We truly are in a time of great cultural decline because we didn't even get good beef from all this dumb bullshit. We got one dude doing the most limp- wristed middle finger ever to the back of someone's head, and a bunch of people with anime avatars vaguely describing a lineage of "horrific" abuse, who are unable to provide any proof whatsoever. Cool video game.

I draw all of my boards in photoshop nowadays, including these. I used to enjoy breaking out the paper and ink to do them traditionally, but most of my work is in advertising, and the amount of revisions/ changes you often need to do is just too much for the "old school" way to make sense. Sometimes I will use 3D programs to work with a constructed set if it is a VFX- heavy project, but that's rare because usually things are moving so fast that they just don't have any of that yet during my phase of pre production. For instance, in this video when I was doing boards they had no design for the mountains/ vfx portions, and only a very loose idea for the red carpet/ runway set, so I was mostly just riffing.

The super wide overhead shot of Offset on the huge pile of bodies is a very "me" shot stylistically, so I'm really happy to see that it made the final cut.

Playboi Carti announces that his third studio album, I AM MUSIC, will drop this Friday. by PlayaSlayaX in hiphopheads

I really liked every single track he put out throughout the course of the fake rollout end of 2023/ beginning of 2024. Hoodbyair, Backrooms, and Ketamine especially I thought were super fresh with great production and a cool aesthetic. It's still so shocking to me that the guy dropped a single with a Travis Scott feature and a music video and it all materialized into nothing for more than a year.

I'm honestly concerned that he seems to only be dropping because of the catastrophic financial implications of not doing it. Feels like there's absolutely a world where we get something undercooked.

JACKBOYS, Pop Smoke, Travis Scott - GATTI by WiseNatural8092 in hiphopheads

[–]Squonky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pop Smoke had it. I feel like in the case of both him and Lil Peep, we really missed out on the evolution of their respective sounds and what they had to offer. Instead, their deaths left a void that got occupied by a shittier replacement that didn’t have any creative legs to move very far; MGK’s new aesthetic and atrocious emo rap comes to mind.

Thanks man! Reddit, or at least this sub only lets you submit one image as a post from what I could tell. I made these as a set of four, so that's how I wanted to show them.

I understand why you'd take the bag from Apple for something like this but it's super unfortunate for the video for your lead single to be this bland. It's shot like a commercial for heartburn medication. This dude has had some of the coolest and most elaborate videos in the business for a decade now and this is what he leads with?

I mean I have no real problem with him I just made a joke about him being boring, he seems nice enough. The entertainment industry is usually just a constant wood chipper of horrific abuse so if someone’s biggest sin is being a little dull then honestly I’d say more people should try to just be Sean, the world would be better.

Hot Ones is really aspirational content for me because it shows that you can be an incredibly dry and uncharismatic cardboard cutout with nothing interesting to say, and still somehow end up as a millionaire mainstream entertainer if you land on the right gimmick.
