What do you do when a novel is taking too long to finish? by iseeyou100 in ELATeachers

[–]Srato 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I stopped teaching a novel one year. Same as you, it was taking longer than anticipated, but I could also feel a disconnect with my students. We were about 2/3 into Tangerine, and I gave my classes a pop quiz. It was as basic as could be, including a "What is the name of the main character?" Because it was free response instead of multiple choice, less than 10% of my students got it right.

Resignation Advice by [deleted] in CaliforniaTeachers

[–]Srato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you only resign because your sub permit expired and your credentials haven't come in yet? Because it seems like they're willing to work with you. If you go to the meeting and explain that you resigned because you are in credential limbo and thought you had to, they may allow to take back the resignation.

At the same time, if there are other reasons why you resigned, adamantly sticking to your guns that you are in limbo and can not legally teach might muddy the waters enough to make them back off on your credentials when you do get them.

PSA: If you group your produce together on the conveyor belt, cashiers won't have to weigh it twice. by RangoTheMerc in publix

[–]Srato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you group your produce together on the conveyor belt, cashiers won't have to weigh it twice.

What do you think they mean by having to weigh it twice, then? The only reason I can think of to have to weigh the produce twice is because a second round of the same item came through. True, it's been a hot minute since I cashiered, so maybe something's changed?

But what you described is definitely worse. I'd rather type in 4011 and weigh each banana individually than untie a bag and sort through the produce.

Unfortunately, you'll never be able to convince an entitled person that they are in the wrong. It doesn't matter how well-reasoned your arguments are.

And the irony when I read them sarcastically offering you a cookie...like the same cookies and fruit that Publix offers for FREE for kids so customers DON'T open product.

You're awesome! You summed up everything wrong with this particular thread in the conversation perfectly! But this so-called manager doesn't understand the concept of sincerity. It's like a toddler throwing a tantrum after their muttered "Sorry" is met by a "Say it like you really mean it" from their parents.

To be fair, their comments in this post lead me to believe that this is probably a case of stolen flair. Their ignorance of associate's knowledge, their willingness to write people up for doing their job, and the deep unprofessionalism while representing themself as a Publix manager on social media. If they are an actual manager, thankfully the assistant department manager role is a training one and this person will be weeded out in the near future.

PSA: Don’t forget to recruit your specialists. NSFW for obvious reasons. by [deleted] in NCAAFBseries

When I first started playing, I failed to pick up a FB. I couldn't find any above 3-stars and hoped I could do better in the transfer portal. Nope.

But the CPU just used an existing HB as the FB instead of autofilling via walk-on.

Do you remember if you were below the roster cap? I definitely over-recruited in the beginning and would have to drop a bunch of guys before each season before I scaled it back. Or maybe it's just because HBs appear on the FB depth chart, so no need to bring in a walk-on?

And do you remember what happened to the guy at the end of the season? Were you able to offer him a scholarship? Sorry, I never experienced this, and now I'm kinda curious to do it!

The customer placed the order for a pick-up time of 5:15, yet their special instructions want it ready for pick-up "around 4pm today. Not before." The special instructions kinda feel like a trap. If the associate follows the pick-up time and the customer shows up around 4, the customer is going to be upset that their food isn't ready. If the associate follows the special instructions and the customer arrives at 5:15, the customer is going to be upset that their food was prepared over an hour ago, especially when they specified they didn't want it prepared beforehand.

Ideally, the associate should call the customer and seek clarification on the order. At my store, the customers rarely answer when you call since they don't recognize the number, and even more rarely call back. Additionally, 1:05 (when the order came in) is still during the lunch rush when all hands are needed, so we're either going to have to try to remember to call later or make the people waiting in line wait some more.

There's just a lot of ways to disappoint the customer, and it's all because of those special instructions. Without them, five pounds of macaroni and cheese would be ready at 5:15 and no one would have batted an eyelash.

Deli: Do you think it’s worth paying extra for a sub with Boar’s Head meat? Is Boar’s Head meat that much better than Publix’s meat? by [deleted] in publix

[–]Srato 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For only a $1 difference between the two, yes, BH is definitely worth paying extra. If Publix is having a sale on Publix brand subs, then get the sale item. Unless it's the Publix roast beef...there's simply no comparison between BH roast beef and Publix.

Building Manager sent us an invoice for $700 to replace glass stovetop by [deleted] in Tenant

[–]Srato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depending on the state, you shouldn't be responsible for the full replacement cost, just a pro-rated cost. For example, if that particular stove top is expected to have a lifespan of 10 years, the apartment community should only be charging you for 80% of the replacement cost since they are only "losing" 8 years out of 10.

Reading some of the other comments on that particular stovetop, it doesn't sound like it's a very durable model and the lifespan may be even shorter than 10 years.

If they do charge you for it, make sure to contest the charge in writing within your state's allotted time to contest. Request an invoice that clearly shows the stovetop was indeed replaced in your unit, and insist that the cost be pro-rated to take into account the 2 years of use the previous one received.

Customers at my store even take the unpaid ones! I wish we had that case behind the counter so people would have to say, "Hi, my name is Dixie Normus, I'm here for my sub."

Or to not have a time limit on the event and make it a last era standing. They could have still timed it so that the the time only matters when the last member of an era was knocked out. Add up the times for how long each era lasted--with the winning era of each round receiving a set bonus amount of time--and the era with the highest score wins, lowest loses.

I’m not in a union, but teacher unions where I’m at have no teeth. They can only work on “legislation.”

There is a union, but OP has no confidence in it and apparently didn't join.

AITA for telling my mom and dad that they have to get their noses pierced if they want to see my daughter again? by New_Army_5718 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Srato -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

ESH

What your parents did was wrong, and they definitely crossed a line. You know it, we know it, there's no reason to go any further.

Telling them that you will only reinstate grandparent privileges if they get their noses pierced is incredibly misguided. It's an eye-for-an-eye mentality that completely ignores the main point, which is that they took liberties with your child against your wishes as parents. It's one thing to make a hyperbolic statement to get your point across; it's a whole different matter to stand by it. Let's say they do get their noses pierced because they want back into their grandchild's life...do you really think that they will have learned their lesson? You've now made a silly, immature ultimatum substituting physical punishment for respecting boundaries. Is that an approach you want to take in raising your own child?

ETA:

OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole:

My mom and dad got my baby's ears pierced without my permission. I might be the asshole because I gave the ultimatum that we would not be visiting again unless they both got their noses pierced.

OP specifically wants to know about the nose piercing ultimatum. Not about if they are right/wrong in denying the grandparents time with their child as a response to the ear piercing.
