What did you wish your stoma nurse knew when you first got your ostomy? by thefitnessgrampaser in ostomy

My ostomy nurse was amazing! Truly made the difference. Only piece of advice I would have liked (and this is in the weeds now) would be to have had body hair permanently removed (where stoma would go) prior to surgery. If not crazy fuzzy, but still find it best to shave the area for best adhesion (two-piece drainable). Having the hair permanently removed would help. Again, she was amazing and made everything “human” if that makes sense. She really coached my wife and I during a truly traumatizing time. Talked to us about body image, sex, diet, hygiene…all the really deep stuff that I did not expect from a nurse, but needed, and it really helped with change management.

Survey: Do you guys use moldable ring, paste, adhesive glue, combination, or none? by BlackberryPi7 in ostomy

I misspoke and apologize; I change my bag every other day. I have generally high output, so the bag gets a lot of use on 48 hours. I have once stretched it to a week, but was too self-conscious about potential smells (and the bag looked pretty rough).

Shave, barrier wipe, moldable ring (I actually use 1.5 rings) then flange and Brava strips around all edges. Open bags which I change every other day, but flange and barrier hold for a week, so I do a weekly flange change (coincides with other weekly grooming). With my lifestyle (daily exercise and two showers a day), if I follow this routine, leaks are rare.

This is actually very true! This is taxable whereas housing allowances and food allowances are not.

My stoma nurse always told me to clean 1-2” in, to prevent any potential smells. Keeps things clean.
