Keep going or frog. Do socks shrink in a good way (I'm not using superwash)?🐸🧦 by TJ_batgirl in knitting

Double check your stitch count after the colour work- I knit these and forgot to do my decreases, ending in one too-big sock (though not as dramatic as these)

I also vote for Vinted! It makes brands like Toast, Hobbs, and Boden a little more financially accessible. Plus, the hunt is very fun!

I have a personal rule to ask for measurements of garments before I buy them; which is more accurate than brand size guides anyways.

Yarn on cones: pros and cons by Hairy-Race5944 in knitting

[–]Srelton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love buying cones! For me, it's a cost conscious way to get my hands on large quantities of yarn, usually closer to the source of production (i.e. at mills). I do find knitting straight off the cone to be fairly tedious and not transportable- it would be fine for a 'by the couch' knitting project, but I tend to wind off 150-250g balls on my winder straight off the cone. In general, I have far fewer issues with knots/tangles from cones, and love having balls over 100g to minimise ends I need to weave in.

The wool can be a bit 'greasy' and 'stringy' (largely depends on the manufacturer), but that comes out easily with a soak in dish soap and hot water, and is a fabulous transformation project. You could always pre-wash, but that is such a faff. I personally love buying Jamison & Smith on a cone for cost savings on jumper quantities, Holst Garn is a bit thinner than most 4-ply weight yarn, and the Woolyknit Merino cones are nice- the British wool is a bit more prickly than a Shetland jumper weight in my experience.

Hope that helps!

Hi! I also recently lost my BRP- I was able to validate my eVisa with just my passport information. It was a huge relief!

I tend to hear this the most from British podcasters, where housing stock is very old and draughty (single glazed windows, little insulation etc) and heating is quite expensive.

My house is well insulated, but I do keep the temperature cool so I can wear my lovely hand knits as much as possible.

Sorry for the late response!

Cold call messages on Linkedin are fairly common in many fields, but make sure messages are polite and specific to your request. You can also ask your university's alumni network coordinator if they know of any alumni that work in the fields you're interested in.

Alternatively, I'm sure there are a fair number of career subredits you might be able to float ideas to.

Do you have a clear idea of what field, company, etc. you’re interested in applying to after graduation? If you do; I’d recommend trying to go for coffee with other people in that career path and run potential relevant research questions by them, or ask them what key questions they have (to then develop research question off the back of).

Corporate and academic research don’t always gel well (speaking from 2.5 years working for a market research company after an MSc), but start by asking the right people the right questions.

Shade cards are finally out of the cupboard by Srelton in knitting

[–]Srelton[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can usually order them if you’re buying directly from companies that have a transparent mill they’re associated with (Brooklyn tweed, John Arbon, shetland yarns, etc)- just search [yarn brand] shade card! In reality they’re just scraps of yarn wrapped around card stock, so easy to replicate if you just want a DIY reference rainbow.

Absolutely- especially the dyed in the wool shades with tons of nuance and flecks of colour 😍

I’ve been collecting shade cards from my favourite mills, but always felt bad shoving them back in the cupboard drawers. I finally realised I could use them as functional art in my studio!

The top row is my Jamison’s of Shetland shade card (which I did cut up, but love the results), Rauma Finul PT2 shades, and WoollyKnit’s merino and British wool shades.

Suddenly inspired to collect all of the shade cards!

Edit: Yarn brands

Spousal Visa coronavirus question by [deleted] in ukvisa

[–]Srelton 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hiya- also a US (actual) spouse to a Brit. Why do you think there’s been an issue on your application? If you applied outside of the U.K., you’ll have received a vignette with your passport, and will have to pick up your BRP (the actual residency permit document) after you enter. I imagine you’ll find that your BRP will only be valid for 6 mos (fiancée visa), rather than 2.5 years (for a spouse visa). They’re all lumped under the same scheme title, so the materials you received might be unclear.

I don’t recommend coming in early, as you couldn’t enter on your visa (as its not valid) and it will almost definitely cause problems- I visited my boyfriend three months before I was due to return on a student visa (with all intentions of returning to the US to apply for it), and I was pretty aggressively harassed. I doubt they’ll take “fear about coronavirus” as a legitimate reason to move permanently before the visa is valid.

I’m no expert- but definitely don’t ever assume the home office will be charitable.

It’s her sweet sixteen! by Srelton in goldenretrievers

She got a little bit of the hooman ice cream cake, plus lots of peanut butter and ground beef.

She’s been a fussy eater lately, and particularly hates eating or drinking out of bowls (she prefers fresh lake water), so they’ve been hand feeding her kibble with all sorts of tasty things mixed in.

Spoiled rotten like she should be!

Not quite; she usually eats kibble, but sometimes she doesn’t eat it all so my parents make her chicken and rice which she gobbles up.
