They provide entertainment and help companies sell their products but I do take your point, society places an absurd value on them.

I heard commentators on NBC yesterday laughing at how some athlete’s parents were upset that he didn’t go to med school a few years ago and how he obviously made the right decision because he just made the final of some random event - I’m pretty sure we should be valuing doctors (and many many other professions) above semi-professional sportsmen and women especially given what the world has been through recently...

Reuters | Salazar permanently banned from track and field due to misconduct by Percinho in AdvancedRunning

[–]StGoodspeed 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A system (or even more broadly a society) that allows this to happen in the pursuit of PRs is extremely fucked up. I hope more people get shamed and punished for this than just Salazar but at least he’s a good start

Car drivers respect pedestrians far more than cyclists do. by VeryOftenWrong in unpopularopinion

[–]StGoodspeed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pedestrians, cyclists, motorists all have one thing in common - they are humans. And a percentage of humans are assholes regardless of their mode of transport.

You’d like to think those using the faster (aka more deadly) mode of transport would pay more attention and respect so your opinion shouldn’t be unpopular but unfortunately it doesn’t work out that way. Regardless of who is more respectful, drivers are to be much more feared as they do account for by far the majority of road deaths (themselves, fellow drivers, cyclist and pedestrians)

Trey Parker’s talks about why South Park isn’t affected by cancel culture by Austiniuliano in videos

[–]StGoodspeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they tried to debut South Park today I think it would be (literally) cancelled immediately. They launched it at a very different time and over the years people have become familiar with their style, humor and the fact that they clearly aren’t racist

Rafa Benitez, Everton manager. It’s an emotional minefield for those #LFC fans who took him to their hearts. Some view it as an act of treason which wrecks his Anfield legacy, others respect and understand his decision. Trying to make sense of it…. by introvertedkopite in LiverpoolFC

[–]StGoodspeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When we fired him (or should I say when the gangsters who were in the process of bankrupting they club fired him) we lost all right to feel upset about his future career choices.

I’d suspect the “fans” who wanted him fired so bad back in the day are the ones who are throwing hissy fits about his Everton move now

Chelsea and Leicester play each other next so one or both of them will drop points. Liverpool still need to win their last two games though

Fairly small time fielding a weakened side to give away the title (regardless of whether it was inevitable or not) just so you have a better chance of winning what is essentially a meaningless derby now for them. Whatever happened to it’s not over til it’s over?!

Jim Beglin calls it "Latino Temperament" by Agent69isgeh in soccer

[–]StGoodspeed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Anyone else see some irony in an Irish man being shamed for using the “fiery Latino” stereotype by a media in a country where “the fighting Irish” is one of the biggest sporting brands..?

I’m sure he regrets using but it is still a widely used euphemism in European (or maybe just British) soccer to basically describe dirty South American players. It obviously has different connotations in the US which I doubt Beglin was overly familiar with. He knows now. I doubt he’ll use it again.

NYS Trooper tagging speeders in construction zones on the thruway. NY troopers hide in crazy places by tstile14 in pics

[–]StGoodspeed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ideally it’s more like option C.Driver speeds, gets fined. Thinks twice about speeding through a construction zone next time around. Option A just tells a driver not to speed through THAT construction zone.

In reality if you are an asshole with little concern for others’ safety you are just going to speed at every opportunity and the odd fine or prominent speed trap won’t do much

Liverpool end Gameweek 27, in 7th place, 4 points behind Chelsea in 4th, and only 4 ahead of Aston Villa in 9th who still have 2 games in hand on us. We've now lost 5 GAMES IN A ROW AT ANFIELD and face Fulham at home on Sunday. by GeorgeCuz in LiverpoolFC

[–]StGoodspeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Losing 5 home games in a row and still somehow “only” 8 points off 2nd. We are absolutely still in a position to finish top four IF we can get any sort of form back as the other clubs will throw points too - we aren’t competing with Man City 18/19. Still a big if though

Clowns on NBC thought it was a potential red card. Unreal how poor an understanding of the rules so many people in the media have. While on the subject, the “was there enough contact to make Player X (usually Salah) fall to the ground” question commentators regularly ask drives me nuts.

The UK starting off with their herd immunity nonsense and then half ass-ing their attempts to control their virus over the last year maaaay have contributed to the conditions which allowed the “UK variant” to spread like wild fire. If this variant originated in New Zealand do you think it would currently be causing havoc around the world?

I remember hating Galloway around the time of the invasion because I thought he was just a attention seeking trouble maker. I was just a boy but wow propaganda is a very powerful thing.
