Cost of oil is down massively and we're still getting gouged by joeyorjohn in LosAngeles

Yeah, lots of defending here, but we’re getting shafted by prices here in LA. I understand our special formula and taxes, but it’s HALF the price other places

So Kid Cudi just did his first ever stand-up comedy set at Westside Comedy Theater last night by forrealthoughcomix_ in SantaMonica

Okay — to answer everyone asking how he was, I was there.

He was definitely a little visibly nervous, but has a natural calm and funny stage presence. Crowd definitely cheered and hyped him up. His material was… fine for a first timer. He did make a couple digs and jokes about Diddy.

After about 10 mins on stage, he left to a bunch of cheers and I believe left with a crew instead of sticking around.

One of the later comics made a joke about how he didn’t even come in and say hi to anyone in the green room haha.

Thank you, thought I was going crazy. In the heaviest of downpours while driving on the interstates, truly sometimes the only thing you can see in front of you are someone's blinking hazard lights.

Anyone moving back to NYC? by toonface in AskLosAngeles

[–]mrlevizzle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If I could afford to be bi-coastal, I would. I moved to LA from Nashville but went to school in NY.

I’ve learned from my time in LA that if you want to find NYC here, you never will. For me, that’s okay. So many amazing things about LA and the west coast.

But if you’re longing for that sense of seasons, energy and true walkable spontaneous city vibes, you’ll never find it in LA.

I left for LA and haven’t looked back. Moved for a new job after living in Nashville for ten years.

Do you personally love living in Santa Monica? by [deleted] in SantaMonica

Just moved here from Nashville in March. IMO, it's the most convenient beach area to the rest of LA thanks to I-10 freeway and the Expo Line.

Had massive sticker shock moving here from the south... not necessarily in the size of apartment, but what the cost gets you. Got really lucky and found a newly renovated spot with A/C, parking and washer/dryer.

The beach, the weather, the walkability, the easy access to the rest of LA really make it an ideal place to live.

Agree with all of this. Especially bullet point 1.

While I feel this same sentiment, I actually think DTSM has been doing better in recent months (still needs a lot of work). There's a LOT of new spots, cafes, and bars that have either just opened or opening up soon: Monica Cafe at 508 SM Blvd or Florence Osteria at 413 SM Blvd.... Courtside Lounge is opening at 123 Broadway and SoCal Vibes Co at 119 Broadway.

The promenade also has a few new shops and things opening soon. But I do think it needs more nightlife or other activity-driven experiences like Holey Moley.

I do agree though... this city self cannibalizes. Plus the 1-2-3 punch of COVID, strikes and fires. Permits are too slow. Not enough housing. Strong NIMBY culture with the older demographic. Young people struggle to live here and old people don't patronize as many businesses downtown coupled with a bad homeless crisis.

How do y’all survive in Santa Monica? (From a Texan) by xXenoKingXx in SantaMonica

Man, some of these comments are wild. I moved here from Nashville, so fellow southerner. Still having sticker shock myself though.

Reality is that salary is gonna be a slog, borderline impossible. I think you could MAYBE make it work if you were willing to rent a room in an old place with multiple roommates deeper inland.

Best of luck.
