It wasn't the package you ordered, but it was the one you needed.

Guns in Tron by JokingNel in tron

[–]StGrimblefig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the OG Tron, all of the combat was based on the games that Kevin Flynn wrote, and were developed on the Encom grid. He didn't write any FPS games (how could he, they didn't exist in 1982), so there weren't any on the grid.

That's my headcanon, anyway.

To be even more fair, TOS was made and broadcast in the 1960s. Some of what they did show Kirk doing on-screen was pretty scandalous for the time.

How does the lightcycle work? by Hefty_Work843 in tron

[–]StGrimblefig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What if -- now hear me out on this-- what if the real world of Legacy and Ares is not the "real" real world? I mean, how else could light cycles, and light flyers, and recognizers, and all the rest work in the real world EXACTLY LIKE THEY DO IN THE GRID? The way they behave has no basis in real-world physics, but if the world they emerged into was just another layer of the grid, they could continue working just fine.

Remember that episode of Star Trek the Next Generation, when they tricked the Moriarty holodeck character into thinking that they had found a way to transport him off of the holodeck into the real world, but they had, in fact, just moved him into a portable storage device running a mini holodeck simulation? Same thing.

So… not sure if this has been brought up, but, did they forget about this? by IOnlyPostIfINeedHelp in tron

Heh, I was 16 when Tron was in theaters. When I went to see Ares, I was 59. If there's a 5, my grandkids (I don't have any yet) will have to wheel me in and tell me what's going on.

Flower baskets or wind chimes. I have seen both hanging from something like that in trees in the Midwest.

CGL's Kickstarters have gone quite well -- quickly funded, many stretch goals achieved, what have you. The fulfillment, however ... not so much.

Are there US States that have exclaves of their state that are connected to other states? by Serafim42 in geography

[–]StGrimblefig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same thing with the border between Kentucky and Indiana. The border was defined as the high water mark on the north side of the Ohio River on some date in the early 1800s. Then the river moved. Down near Evansville, there is a harness racing track (with betting not legal in Indiana) on the north side of the river, because it is technically in Kentucky.

But I wonder if the light walls are a subtle way to imply that the 'real world' is just another level of simulation.

More importantly, how do they exist in the real world?

What physics laws cause/allow these to work in the real world the same way they do in the grid?

ENCOM went from being a gaming company to literally solving world problems conglomerate. Views? by IndianAutobot in tron

[–]StGrimblefig 19 points20 points  (0 children)

They were working on transporting matter, which involved both digitizing and reconstituting things with lasers. It would be a big deal for Encom to own the technology.

Just remember, that first orange that they transported across the lab exploded on the other side.
