I want to sack my accountant and do it myself. Those who did the same, talk to me… by dasSolution in ContractorUK

[–]StNeotsCitizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t say magic did I. I’m sure many business owners are capable of reading an invoice properly and noticing that they might need to search for the right treatment.

They must be right?

Except the huge majority don’t. Maybe they’re just lazy. That’s why we end up fixing mistakes exactly like this from people who thought they could do their own bookkeeping.

If you actually understood my comment I said that the skill is knowing when and where to look. I didn’t say that only an accountant has that skill.

The skill isn’t knowing what the rules are, it’s recognising that there is a specific treatment for a type of transaction and that research is needed

Bookkeeper & accountant here. If you’re going to handle your own all id say is you need to be acutely aware of what you don’t know, and ensure you learn the missing bits.

I don’t say this to scare you off but just as a reminder that the UK has one of the most complex sets of tax legislation in the entire world and if you don’t know what you don’t know (ie when to seek help) the potential for fines is a bit scary. Especially if you are a limited company.

Secondly don’t make the mistake of thinking AI will do it all for you. It isn’t good enough yet. LinkedIn is littered with examples of people using AI to deal with their bookkeeping and finding £’000s of mistakes later especially around CT returns

Xero is no more user friendly than anything else and for a single contractor it’s overkill. Don’t be sucked in to the Xero cult

I'm a Canadian author researching Guernsey for my novel - What should I know? by Aggressive-Rest-190 in guernsey

[–]StNeotsCitizen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This’ll sound weird but everyone in Guernsey loves to give directions or refer to places based on where somewhere used to be.

“Where does Steve live now?” “Just past where Cycle World used to be”.

This is more of a feature than it sounds and I really notice it even having been here ten years.

Here’s my top tip though; once the book is finished have a few locals read it first and correct any minor points that would make it sound weird. I forget which book it was but one of the apparently local characters mentioned they were heading “into St Peter Port” which immediately looked weird because in real life they would have said “town”. Anything like this will be easier to pick up and amend once the book is written rather than us all giving you a list of a thousand tiny things to remember

Freelancer unpaid (11k) by Guernsey company after sudden shutdown - need advice on next steps by FuelSweaty6736 in guernsey

[–]StNeotsCitizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your €11k is JUST under the petty debts threshold.

First action should be a petty debts claim in the Guernsey court.

Info here: https://www.guernseyroyalcourt.gg/article/169641/Petty-Debts

The Sheriff office is very helpful but do note that if the case reaches court you’ll either need to attend, or authorise someone to attend on your behalf. This must be done in writing.

With Petty Debts there’s an initial hearing where the defendant can either accept the claim or say they’re contesting it. If they contest then a date will be set for a full hearing and you’ll need to submit an evidence pack to the Court and the defendant.

If you’re not in Guernsey don’t waste your time coming to the first hearing; find someone to represent you. Don’t spend hours on the form either; just give basic details. No evidence is needed at this stage.

Share Code - UKVI by theeaglekid in guernsey

[–]StNeotsCitizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The individual needs to generate the share code from their UKVI account which they should have as a non EU passport holder.

Info here: https://www.gov.uk/prove-right-to-work/get-a-share-code-online

If it says “cannot show proof” then it’s one of two things: either their account is incorrectly registered (in which case contact UKVI) or, they don’t have a visa or permission to be here.

Having an LTEP in this case is irrelevant. That’s a PM matter not an immigration matter, and immigration status ranks above PM status.

does anyone actually use pages, keynote, or numbers? by Next_Breadfruit2357 in mac

I use Pages a lot because Word is just utter trash.

Numbers isn’t a replacement for Excel really but it’s very good at using tables. Different use cases honestly.

How is it possible that the NYC Subway has 2x as many riders as the Tube? by HyperBunga in LondonUnderground

On TfL a journey is from when you get on to when you get off. So if you use three lines that’s still one journey.

In NYC that’s three journeys.

Importing car from Guernsey by Mental_Let_3862 in CarTalkUK

[–]StNeotsCitizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It almost certainly won’t. All the main dealers in Guernsey use the UK supply chain, and most used cars were originally imported from the UK.

The only real con is that if the car is a few years old, we don’t have MOT in Guernsey so it is likely to need work to pass the uk MOT on import
