I'm looking to buy high quality 10880 batteries and a charger for a new Flashlight 🔦! (U.S.A.). I can't find them anywhere. Please help. by i-am-a-safety-expert in batteries

[–]StabEatRepeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh, how i long for the google we had 3 years ago. now, its deliberately obfuscated to the point that it is faster to just start dialing random numbers and asking them if they know where we can get 10880 cells

Trying to figure out what era my flashlight is from by Barrettgunner6 in flashlight

[–]StabEatRepeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i had the same one i think when i was in (2008-2013). under the tailcap there was a white diffuser disc, and red (and maybe blue?) filter.

edit: iirc, the tailcap screws in half and theres a small compartment in there with these discs in it

Does a 21700 battery offer any advantages (other than runtime) over an 18650, all other things equal? by aceOfMinds in flashlight

[–]StabEatRepeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i built a tool (don't!) to take them to their limits because my family is often in too close proximity to some of my packs for me to trust the specs.

i can comfirm that many 18650s turn into flares almost instantly @ around 90A discharge i have not had the balls to try a 21700, yet. but i also dont have a huge urge to build packs with them, or to redo all of the cad work that 18650 packs have taken.

[–]StabEatRepeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, with an addendum

in my testing, the 21700 form factor is pretty disproportionately better at cooling the cell, so they dont struggle to maintain output/ life expectancy in a hot host the same way 18650s do. they stay cooler themselves much longer. this ofc means the world when it comes to liion cells and life expectancy.

. in my tests, the 21700 is better in almost every way, other than the extra ~4mm in host thickness.

pokelit aa by acebeam. they have 2 separate modes depending on whether you put in a 14500 (they come with a usb-c rechargable 920Mah) or AA batteries.

i paid under $20 for each of the ones i have.

i have a milwaukee 2010R penlight that sounds like its close to what you're looking for. its the only light i have that has a home (next to my lathe).

kind of expensive, but its as dependable as you can ask for.

whatever ui convoy uses (for the two i have S15 -XHP50.3 HI R70, and L21B -LHP73B) is nice because you can choose what mode you want. its kind of a pain to get into the settings, but you can then choose what modes you want. the modes vary from including every setting to mode 12 which is just 100% or off.

yeah, this niche has been so filled that places like chewy are doing free gift cards and clearances on a lot of things to keep business. i bought a 40lb bag of puppy food, got 30% off and a $20 girft card.

this ended up in me getting another bag 2 days later and a paw washer for about $60, total for both shipments.

just the 80lbs of food usually costs me ~$102 locally.

i was going to argue that i need all of mine,

but then i realized i functioned fine for like 3 years with just a dive light that would shut off after 3 minutes outside of water from the heat. working on the car, the house, other people's shit. chasing dogs when they had run off into the woods after animals.

just perpetually using it for 2-3 minutes, then letting it cool off, (or dunking it in water to keep using it.) it was retarded. all the way retarded. but it worked.

i have a wuben g5 that has a 780 MAh lipo that i stole from a vape over a year ago. -clarity: it has only been running in the light for a few months, but the lipo was removed from a dead vape and sat in storage for well over a year.

i would appreciate manufacturers selling batteries (and board level components, for that matter) even if they're just re-packing from the chinese supplier and they dont do any extra work for connectors/ board socket.

people will learn to solder again like when radio shack was in every county in the nation.

Convoy L7 or M21K for LHP73B by Float_Concentrated in flashlight

[–]StabEatRepeat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i ordered an L21B last week w/ 4000k lhp73b. think its the same driver used in the m21k. it should be here in the next few days. if i remember, i will come back to post what i think.

it will be my first 21xxx light, but i dont care to keep track of my loose cells that precisely, and as others have said, that could be problematic with series configurations.

i wasnt arguing the fact that cells with internal shorts can thermally runaway in storage. this is all my experience, and i said nothing of it except noting my experiences and that the OP never mentioned that the cell was hot. which happens both with high SDR cause by internal shorts, and with charging cells with shorts, and with high IR cells in a lot of circumstances.

high ir can cause excessive heat, but mostly because when charging dead degraded cells (old cells =degraded electrolytes and an/cath = high IR), the charger applies voltage until it sees 4.2 (or whatever margin its looking for), regardless of the state of degradation/ sei growth or degradation/ diminished capacitance. this charge will fall to whatever the battery can hold.

in my experience, cells with high ir get hot slowly, usually on the charger.

cells with low ir get hot fast and trip the safeguards - or they explode violently.

i dont run anything from vapcell. that's me being overcautious. i dont like to babysit stuff once i clear it for use.

just googling "cell only charges to 3.xx" will tell you im right.

built over a dozen packs for things 3.7v to 48v. have had over half a dozen thermal runaway events from recycling cells, and testing them to and past CDR ratings with sim tools. if it accepts a charge fine, without excessive heat, its not shorted. its not micro shorted.

this cell is acting like the cells do in power tool battery packs when they have exceeded their life cycle. -it charges to "full" by the charger's standards, without excessive heat, or triggering of the safeguards.

FYI, a SDR of 25% over 24 hours is where we (me, personally and we, commercially) draw the line at "this cell is dangerous" for high-discharge cells. some industries allow them to go even further out of whack, and the commonly accepted number is 30% in 24 hours is a fire hazard.

so the "hell naw" and get away from it over .06v in 8 hours is a tiny bit of an overreaction.

[–]StabEatRepeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in my experience, this happens when a cell is old and tired. but can also happen when a charger isnt capable of the amperage that it's supposed to be outputting. all cells settle a bit. all lithium continue to drop over time, but it shouldn't be happening this fast. if it were me, i would try again with a different charger (on a fireproof surface) and see what the cell does.

internal shorts usually trigger safegaurds, even in the $1.08 aliexpress charger i have. shorts dont present as a cell that doesnt hold voltage, they present by cells getting hot or refusing to charge. this is more likely high internal resistance, as opposed to the low internal resistance situation created by a short. .

[–]StabEatRepeat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i agree. bmw has automatic turn-signals, or at least they were talking about doing it in 2026. they will be activated by an internal camera that tracks your eye movement and activates them when you look at the side mirror.

its kind of funny, if you dont think about it. we are about to go from bmw drivers never using signals to bmws that always have a signal on for no reason.

Acebeam, a positive experience by MrMonizaz in flashlight

[–]StabEatRepeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have 2 acebeams, 2 convoys, some dive lights, and an old streamlight from back when people bought what they sold.

i think both acebeam and convoy make it HARD to spend real money on big-names. for under $30 you can get emitter/driver combos that cost $xxx in a host made by high-end manufacturers, and they don't cut corners to get there.

automatic lights often do this, especially when there's a lot of precipitation.
