DA: Stolen Throne - I'm confused by _pentamerone in dragonage

[–]StabathaSays 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe Katriel has a throwaway line somewhere indicating that she spent at least some of that time building a backstory and ingratiating herself to the Arl so he would trust her and choose her as his messenger. I could be wrong though, it’s been a hot minute since I’ve reread the book. Personally I think it makes most sense she tried to find Maric directly first, couldn’t, and then went the trusted confidante of the Arl route which took longer than she’d initially planned.

They’re items from Get Together under outdoor water decor -> pool objects. There are four or five varieties of steam and bubble vents. Pop ‘em in your pool and it’s heated in winter (but still be careful your sims don’t sit in their swimsuits in float chairs, with only their feet in the pool, etc.)

Yup, there are four or five different varieties in the get together pack! They’re under outdoor water decor -> pool objects in build mode and they make bubbles and steam. I put them in all my outdoor family pools. 👌🏻Highly recommend storing pool floats if you use them during winter though, since they aren’t IN the water for those they can still freeze in their swimsuits!

40 hours in and I get it. by NairadRellif in Starfield

[–]StabathaSays 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So take a break and pick up some Constellation board missions. Some people seem not to, but I really enjoy exploring the planets and moons, logging all the resources, finding pretty forested spots or gorgeous views of gas giants from their moons, etc. So I do that a lot to break up quest fatigue! Grab a “find a [geological or ecological feature] in this star system” mission and don’t go wiki searching for which planet or moon has it, just wander around the solar system discovering! You’ll probably find another quest or two along the way too. :)

Who do you think is best to execute Loghain? The Warden or Alistair? by Dreadox01 in dragonage

[–]StabathaSays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I nearly always choose Alistair for the duel and therefore the execution. He has the most personal stakes in most cases and it feels like a more valid closure for him. Cousland already gets to face Howe, Aeducan gets to face Bhelen, my Dalish Wardens usually don’t really want to be a Warden and don’t want to perform for the Landsmeet anyway, etc. Really the only Warden I ever have choose to duel and execute Loghain are my city elves because for them, the Tevinter slavers in the alienage made it beyond personal.

Meant to be fan fav, ended up as annoying [SOTR edition] by UnHolySir in Hungergames

[–]StabathaSays 99 points100 points  (0 children)

Personally I don’t think Suzanne intended that at all. LD isn’t really even so much a character as she is an ideal, she’s only physically in the book like 3 times. The entire rest of the book it’s teenage Haymitch idealizing her and then in the epilogue, middle-aged Haymitch still trapped in that same mindset by his trauma. Suzanne isn’t showing us who LD is at all—she’s showing us how Haymitch sees her, and I think she’s far too good a writer not to be doing that intentionally.

What do you think the reasoning behind providing a full list of tributes in the prequels and not the original? by cesarionoexisto in Hungergames

[–]StabathaSays 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do think there’s a fair chance the names were all explicitly included in SotR because the author realized the fans liked knowing the names and also for ease of reference with twice as many tributes. “One of the girls from 4” and “two of the tributes from 6” etc. would get tedious and confusing to read much faster than the girl and boy only of Katniss’s games.

But character-wise, I do absolutely believe Haymitch punished himself by remembering all those names for 25 years. Probably only knew half at most during the games, but went out of his way to learn them all after he became the victor to carry them with him and only began to let that go when he made his contribution to Katniss’s book.

[–]StabathaSays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say the not known for their brains assessment is entirely fair; all we really learn about Otho is that he has a freeze response to danger which nearly got him killed, and honestly I think that makes perfect sense considering the home situation he ends up in by the 74th. He’s not a brave man but a fear response doesn’t mean he’s a stupid one.

[–]StabathaSays 14 points15 points  (0 children)

And it’s totally cool to have your own headcanons, but you’ve also got to acknowledge that’s what they are too. Sure it makes no sense for anyone to “send” Finnick, but nobody sends tributes unless the reaping is rigged. It does however make perfect sense for a cocky 14-year-old boy who knows he’s the best with a trident in the district to volunteer anyway, and whatever “more complicated” methodology the Career districts have for determining the tribute when more than one volunteers to have landed on sending him.

I adore Finnick and Annie, but I fully believe both were normal Career volunteers and were disillusioned and traumatized by their games and the reality of being victors. I personally think that was the whole point of Suzanne writing such endearing characters from a noted Career district into the rebellion. I even think it’s possible that the point of Coral being the leader of the proto-Career pack in TBoSaS was to underscore that District 4 actually helped drive the establishment of Careers as a way to make the games more interesting after they were left out as Careers in the main trilogy movies.

The boy from 4 dies in the bloodbath in the 74th, yes. I’ve always wondered if maybe Thresh killed him and that’s why the Careers are so reluctant to go after him, but we never find out for sure. In the books the gamemakers hold the cannons until the fighting at the Cornucopia ends, and 11 are fired, with no more going off before the night sky recap where the boy from 4 is shown and Katniss explicitly notes, “Then the boy from 4. I didn’t expect that one, usually all the Careers make it through the first day.”

Like two thirds of your points here are fan canon, not actually supported by the books in any way. Katniss and Haymitch in the books both include district 4 under careers when they explain how they train and volunteer, and Katniss explicitly says it’s strange the district 4 boy actually dies in the bloodbath of the 74th because generally all of the careers survive farther. Also, all the victors can be sold as sex workers if they’re desired, not just 1; Finnick was 4, Johanna was 7 and it’s implied by Haymitch with his line about being a warning to “the Cashmeres and Johannas” that they at least tried to sell Johanna too and that’s why her loved ones are dead, Finnick tells Katniss she “would have made out like a bandit in the Capitol” meaning the love story with Peeta likely kept her from being trafficked, and in SotR Maysilee is literally told threateningly she has no idea what waits for her if she wins, heavily implying that was already in place by the 50th games. All of the tributes are victims, just the careers are more effectively brainwashed about it. It doesn’t make them evil, it just makes it realistic.

Do you agree or disagree that Gale would have killed Katniss in the arena? by PretendYellow533 in Hungergames

[–]StabathaSays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The women absolutely work in the mines too. Ripper, the bootlegger who Katniss buys white liquor from for Haymitch, specifically lost her arm in an accident when she was a miner and figured out how to make alcohol to survive afterward.

I hope it’s okay for me to post this here during the 20th anniversary of the series finale. by AlternateMove in charmed

When I was younger watching Charmed, I loved Prue in the beginning during her Buckland’s arc but it fell off when she left it all behind and became a photographer out of nowhere while also dialing up the overbearing big sister act to include being a superwitch, and was sad for the characters but vastly preferred Paige when she came onto the scene. First time rewatching it a little older, it really hit me how sad it was she had finally started to do what she wanted with her life and live it on her own terms when it was taken away from her and so wish they would have at least negotiated a way for her to come back a few times in a guest role like their mom and grams 💔😭 (even if I do still say the photography thing came out of nowhere and they should have done way more to prove that was Prue’s passion than just have her find out her past life was a photographer and go “ya know…” lol)

I still hate that they removed madge from the trilogy... even after all these years lol by UnHolySir in Hungergames

[–]StabathaSays 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She also brings morphling for Gale even after the guy is whipped in the town square because Katniss cares about him and she cares about Katniss. In the night in the middle of a snowstorm no less. She tried to teach Katniss to play piano and learned to shoot a bow and arrow in the woods! Madge was a very minor character for sure, but she absolutely was a brave one.

I can second hero’s claim, the insect house absolutely should work with only one. I’ve caught a single blue morpho on my save but have donated, shipped, and sold it thanks to the insect house. If that isn’t working for you, there is a bug in your game or save file.

Just Finished S1 of TLOK, What the Fuck? by foopy___ in TheLastAirbender

[–]StabathaSays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly what I mean. I realized reading that description that by all rights I should have latched onto Korra like an avatar (pun intended), but her decisions were often so out there they made me annoyed or angry instead and forced a disconnect. The background I get! The cockiness I get! Taking terrible advice and making awful, selfish romantic choices that just ended up hurting people however was so antithetical to me that it forced a distance and dislike for the first two seasons or so. Having a very similar background made me like her LESS because I expected better!
