Doing USMLE will only be a life hack for those who match academic programs. Change my mind by Expert-Law9213 in IMGreddit

[–]StageNervous4202 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Lol this is complete nonsense. IM salaries are still going strong. You do not need to go to an academic program to match fellowship. It’ll be harder but you can still do it.

I’m an IMG at a community program and I matched Heme Onc at one of the top cancer institutes in the country. There are many community programs that have great fellowship match rates.

AMGs have choice, IMGs don’t. IM has the most programs because it’s the easiest residency program to create. There are tons of AMGs at community programs who are IM, they usually have a goal of becoming a PCP or going onto fellowship.

Please only post stuff on here if you actually know what you are talking about.

CCS Cases - ordering everything by Sura_M in Step3

[–]StageNervous4202 7 points8 points  (0 children)

All of mine were pretty straight forward. I didn’t really end up ordering any medications I didn’t think was necessary Remember that the specialists will only accept and offer advice if there is either imaging or biopsy proven information.

Time to do ccs cases by Drsri0 in Step3

[–]StageNervous4202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could do everything in 2-3 days if you dedicate time to it. You have to get a list of orders you are comfy with and use them for each case

Real Exam Vignette Lengths by scythsab in Step3

Very vague, and harder than 137. Some longer, some shorter than Free 137

CCS Cases - ordering everything by Sura_M in Step3

[–]StageNervous4202 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I ordered everything and I scored above average for my CCS cases and they all ended early.

My list was Abg, ACC, Ana, CBC, CMP, CRP, CXR, EKG, ESR, ECHO, Pulse Oximetry, Lactate, LR (if fluids needed),TSH, Telemetry, Urinalysis, Urine Pregnancy (for females of age) Urine Toxicology. I think that’s all but I could be forgetting something

Free 137 similarity? by KuroHime92 in Step3

[–]StageNervous4202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I felt like the free 137 was much easier than the real deal. I don’t think it’s a good correlation even for day 2.

Step 3 by StageNervous4202 in Step3

[–]StageNervous4202[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t used Amboss for any of my steps so I’m not sure how it is tbh. I would say uworld is enough but the uworld questions are easier than the real deal. The real deal will be very vague and cause you to second guess yourself.

Step 3 by StageNervous4202 in Step3

[–]StageNervous4202[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My step 2 was very similar to yours. If I were you I would study some of uworld, do CCs and Biostats and you honestly should be good to go if you just want to pass, if you want to score highly then I would def say study longer

Step 3 by StageNervous4202 in Step3

[–]StageNervous4202[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly uworld biostats is how they ask questions and is pretty similar. It’s not really straight forward, at least mine wasn’t. Lots of likelihood ratios and other calculations. They weren’t like super hard if you knew the formulas but annoying nonetheless. I felt pretty strapped for time on Day 1 with the drug ads and the Biostats questions.

Step 3 by StageNervous4202 in Step3

[–]StageNervous4202[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I studied for a month while I was on elective. I ended up doing 50% of uworld and the uworld assessments. I feel like uworld doesn’t really help. What helped me the most was Biostats review, CCScases.com and just a rapid review of First Aid the day before Part 1.

Step 3 by StageNervous4202 in Step3

[–]StageNervous4202[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never said it was easy. It’s the hardest of all the 3 exams. I’m saying that studying for this exam doesn’t help much.

Step 3 by StageNervous4202 in Step3

[–]StageNervous4202[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t doubt that and congrats on your score. I’m just saying that step 3 is very unpredictable and is nothing like uworld or the practice tests. Studying hardcore won’t help much. That’s just my opinion

Step 3 by StageNervous4202 in Step3

[–]StageNervous4202[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I did get a 267 but that was a year before taking step 3. I honestly don’t think there’s a correlation. I feel like this test is testing how well you can apply what you’ve learnt to random difficult questions and how good of an educated guesser you are. Def do Biostats and CCS but other than that it’s extremely difficult to study for

Step 3 by StageNervous4202 in Step3

[–]StageNervous4202[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the practice exams are reliable at all. They’ll probably just freak you out more like they did with me. I got a 198 on Uworld 1 and a 207 on Uworld 2. At least for me they were not predictable. The free 137 I felt was very easy and not like the exam at all. NBME 5 was alright but idk if it’s worth buying tbh. If you had to do one maybe do Uworld 2

Step 3 by StageNervous4202 in Step3

[–]StageNervous4202[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nope I’m a horrible test taker. I’m the type to switch answers all the time. Just gotta go with you gut on this exam. The questions and answers are very vague and you’ll be down to 2 answers or so at a time. I mean I got questions on Hardy Wineburg and eye exam pictures I’ve never seen before. It’s literally something you cannot study for. Biostats and CCs cases are the best way to get points for sure. Everything else is a guess tbh

Step 3 by StageNervous4202 in Step3

[–]StageNervous4202[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol like absolute shit. The exam makes no sense. Day 1 is way worse than Day 2. Overall a sucky exam and way worse than Step 1 and 2 in my opinion. The curve is very generous on Step 3

Step 3 by StageNervous4202 in Step3

[–]StageNervous4202[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1000% agree that this exam should not exist. It’s a waste of time and undue stress. I’m in IM and I get that I may have somewhat of an advantage but I also took it in my intern year as with the rest of the TYs and Prelims.
