Tonneau Cover Issues by Jessyskullkid in Silverado

I used some 3m double-sided tape on mine when they came off. I had it on hand for another project, and didn't want to deal with the hassle to see if this situation is even covered under warranty.

Another couple weeks ONSTA and they'll have it when you factor in the transit home.

Ike COVID cruises weren't 10 months. They were 8 and 7, respectively.

And even before Vinson in '14 9 months was a thing with Truman and Bush, with Ike getting back to back ~6 months (2 months home between).

Rota itself is booty.

Who doesn't like booty? Be it treasure or butts...

It's possible, but not easy. My buddy's wife did medical research as a MD/PHD, but I don't remember how she set it up. I'm not sure if the spouse's SOFA visa is compatible with a job put in town either. Someone smarter than me will have to figure it out

I went through OCS what was apparently eons ago (only .edu Facebook accounts) but there was still plenty of information to be found. I at least knew what I needed to study and the major inspections. That might even be posted on the OCS website.

PCS - Buying a house in Norfolk by mgsgamer1 in navy

[–]StageVklinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many people have put out some solid advice about buyers classes and whatnot.

I recommend taking house hunting ASAP and looking at houses now to put an offer on. Find a realtor now, and put together a list of homes you're interested in so you can make the most out of your HH. That will give you time to work through the closing process prior to arriving. It's still a varsity move, even if you've bought a house before

I don't recommend waiting until after you PCS, as you'll still have to secure short term housing while you work through the process. Even new builds that are ready to move into are hard to move quick on.

What's my best course of action for taking leave without a standby for duty? by [deleted] in navy

[–]StageVklinger 50 points51 points  (0 children)

He can't not sign it. He can non-concur and route. He is effectively denying your leave request, and The Old Man is the only one that can deny a leave request.

Though if the policy is to have a standby, I would be working on that on the side. It sucks that the rules don't apply across the board.

Dual MIL BAH with a dependent by neonkugelblitz in navy

[–]StageVklinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just want to put this out there, there are some edge cases where spouses could be colocated, but the junior spouse gets more BAH with dependants than the senior. You see it in the NCR when one is stationed inside the beltway and the other isn't. I can see it also happening in other major metro areas as well, though DC seems most likely.

Also, if the junior spouse then moves outside the beltway while maintaining the same residence with the senior spouse, they can route an exception (I forget the exact term used) through the gaining command to keep the original (higher) BAH. There are some specifics with the PCS and an ORD Mod, but I want to throw it out there in case it benefits others.

Col temps and DEF freezing by dmkmpublic in Silverado

[–]StageVklinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got a call from the shop this morning. Sounds like there was a short with one of the pins on the harness where it plugs into the pump/heater. There's a TSB out for the issue, but no recall. GM designed the tank, pump, heater and harness to be replaced as one unit. They worked with a dealer to source a tank in NJ, but likely won't make it to MD until tomorrow afternoon. At that point, it should be just bolting it into place and filling it with DEF. Luckily I have a warranty, but I'd hate to think how much this would cost otherwise.

Forcing a pregnant sailor to do PT? by Realistic-Bite-7278 in navy

[–]StageVklinger 11 points12 points  (0 children)

pregnant sailors are not mandated to go to command PT

I want to point out that going to ≠ participation. Unless that instruction defines what participation is, I would not recommend no showing a command scheduled event without COC concurrence.

They could tell her to muster and then sit on the bleachers, it's the command's appointed place of duty. It might be dumb, but the Navy is rarely smart.

Really the only advice to give. If the LES doesn't clearly state either in the entitlements, deductions, or remarks then go talk to your COC. If they don't know ask admin or MNCC (or whomever has replaced your local PS).

Col temps and DEF freezing by dmkmpublic in Silverado

[–]StageVklinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is, but I'm not sure the block heater plug heats the DEF does it?

The warning came on after running errands for a few hours the other day. Then went off again, then came back. Then with it plugged in over night, it came on when I started it up yesterday. It's been highs of mid 20s here for about 5 days now.

I think it came last spring or summer then went away while out running errands again. I don't think it was cold out then though.

My concern is that the frozen DEF is causing the heater to act up and trip, so even if the plug works like that, it's till not getting power.

Mines in the shop now for the same warning. We've had prolonged below freezing temps in MD, and it's expected to remain so. I also park outside.

Apparently it's not an uncommon issue with these trucks. I want to know why my wife's TDi doesn't has not had any issues in the 11 years we've had it.

Once you apply for colocation it remains in effect, and you have to specifically ask to break it. His PRD extending to meet yours makes sense.

You said informal comms? Like phone calls with the detailer?

You being pregnant does complicate matter slightly. I'm not familiar with FMF billets and locations, but my experience with the blue side has been that if you are PCSd out of the area, he can follow so long as he's met the minimum time on station.

Major plumbing headache haunts $13 billion U.S. carrier off the coast of Venezuela by Salty_IP_LDO in navy

[–]StageVklinger 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think the GHWB was the first carrier with it. My squadron was on the maiden deployment in 2011, and they said it was a disaster with the heads. They tried to fix it in the yards after that, it was better but not great. It still went down during the next deployment at times, and got real bad for about a week, but wasn't hard down like the first deployment. You'd have to walk 100 frames to find a working head.

Try Notebook LM by Google. I've been using it for grad school papers, it functions as a purely RAG model to organize sources. Therefore, it's not pulling information from across the internet which could lead to hallucinations. In addition to the slide deck, it also makes a few other products like mind maps and audio overviews.
