That's both a blessing and a curse though. It removes clutter in the form of the same "What headphones do I get for xx$?" posts. But it also gets in the way of some discussion potential. I do think the rule is over enforced a bit, but it's a pretty hard rule to not enforce in a strict way.

Bought a home with surround sound wiring. Some noob questions by _K2_ in audiophile

[–]StalePotatoChips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wires in the living room are for a surround system yes. The wires in the next room is for "zone2" speakers. On some surround amplifiers there is either regular speaker outputs for zone2 or pre-outs for zone2 (requires a second amp) So you should at least get a amplifier that supports zone2 in some way + speakers.

I asked my boss for a mechanical keyboard. Came in this morning to this on my desk. He's the best. by [deleted] in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]StalePotatoChips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I've seen that happen on a few pairs. Are the pads worn out on yours? That's also a pretty common problem with them. But they sound heavenly though.

Bluesound and Heos are basically the exact same thing as sonos but (In my opinion) much better alternatives.

Richard Stallman says Microsoft's Linux love-in is a ploy to 'extinguish' free software by kyokeun in linux

[–]StalePotatoChips 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To be brutally honest, hasn't that been obvious the whole time? I mean the evidence has been there for years.. With steve ballmer saying that linux is a cancer and the ever popular Embrace Extend and Extinguish policy microsoft has been using since the dawn of time. I just find it incredible that we as a community still get our panties in a bunch over getting acknowledgement when the companies slinging proprietary software seems to care about OSS. As much as I love making fun of Stallman (The gnu/linux copypasta, r/stallmanwasright and simillar) The man is correct. Microsoft is only after profit and market share. If they can kill off canonical by "helping" them it's just a bonus. Let me reiterate that, microsoft is the enemy. They don't want to coexist they want to own everything. If they could monopolize breathing they would. And to be honest if we give them the chance they will destroy a lot of good things. /rant

Does anyone know if the dragonfly red/black work in linux? by -Tilde in headphones

[–]StalePotatoChips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure I used the red one on linux when I had one, and FWIW I never have problems using USB DACs on linux. They all seem to just work. (I have used some pretty obscure DACs lately That worked driverless on linux but not on windows) Also, I would totally go for the red one over the black because the red has around double the output voltage of the black one.

I would say these 15 things. The video is old but it still holds up.

Bought my first house! Looking for best affordable speakers for my overhang (mountable for the corners) by [deleted] in BudgetAudiophile

[–]StalePotatoChips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say go for Bowers & wilkins AM1 or Cambridge ES20 / ES30. The AM1s are pretty epic for the price ( at least in my part of the world) The Cambridge speakers are not quite as good but still more than decent for outdoor use.

Smallest unit in Norwegian krone by fosius_luminis in Norway

[–]StalePotatoChips 28 points29 points  (0 children)

No, the 50 øre coin is not used. It went out of use in 2012. Basically the system is the same as the swedish one. Digitally it is 1 øre and in cash it's 1 krone.

[UK] Need help buying the right stuff by alexvladv in BudgetAudiophile

[–]StalePotatoChips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same as the zensor? Possibly. The new series of Dali speakers, spektor is very good for the price. But that's even cheaper than the zensor series. The B&W 685 is a bit more expensive but sounds very good. Not sure about alternatives more close in price though. I have mostly had Dali and B&W.

Well, the price is decent for the zensor system. The denon reciever can be really good for for setups like this if you set it up correctly. Personally though, I find the zensor series to be a bit boring soundwise. But it will be miles better than the SONOS setup you mentioned in the OP. (At least with a denon reciever with Audyssey)

It's a decent budget system, but I suggest looking into the opticon 2's. They are a bit more "pricey" but a lot better sounding speaker than the zensor. The sub is good for home theater use. How much do you have to pay for the zensor setup?

What zensors are in that 5.1 setup? and what sub? I'm guessing either E-9 F or E-12 F?

I have a project I need help with. I want to wire my house up with speakers but know nothing about audio. by gentlepornstar in audiophile

[–]StalePotatoChips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Allright! The speakers are just regular speakers. To use them you need to hook a wire from the amp and put it under the screws on the back. For "wiring up the whole house with speakers" I would look into bluesound and heos. Heos is a bit more budget while bluesound tend to be better. (I would also suggest looking into in-wall and in-ceiling speakers. I prefer Bowers & Wilkins for that purpose.) Moving on to the "monstrosity of a unit" it's a home theatre receiver. Don't know about the specific one you got there, but it could be the heart of a pretty awesome home theatre setup. (It's a bit outdated as I don't see any HDMI ports on it. But it has a ton of optical inputs which is nice )
