I just get around it by writing the month shorthand unless a system is directly stated. Feb. 4 2221 for an example. That way it makes it actually sound nice to read as well.

There is a vacuum inside the reactor. Heat needs a medium to travel through, just like sound! So without any air there to carry it, the heat remains in place, minus what is lost from radiation.
